About
This summer festival is held in Furano, famous for its lavender fields and as the setting of the TV drama, Kita no kuni kara (From the North Country). The Hokkaido Heso Festival began based on the idea that "the sign marking the center of the body is the navel (heso)," an extension of a concept in Furano's Citizen's Charter established in 1969, which stated, "We are the citizens of Furano, which stands as a sign marking the center of Hokkaido." One of the highlights is the Heso Odori, a dance performed by dancers with faces painted on their torsos. In the early days of the festival there were not enough dancers, but in recent years it has become a huge event with as many as 4,000 dancers performing for 70,000 spectators. It will next be held on July 28th-29th alongside the festival regularly held at Kitamasa Jinja (popularly referred to as Heso Jinja).

Very fun local parade and festival
Jul 2019 • Family
We came to Furano traveling through Hokkaido for the festival and other activities - always on the 28th and 29th of July. Foreigners can participate and get their bellies painted, dress up (provided) and learn the dance and join the parade as well. My 8 year old loved it - as did my 10 year old and husband. Lots of fun. The parade is 7-8pm, but sign up is 3-5pm both days. Earlier in the day, there is dancing and more, food vendors in the evening too. A very fun local event to celebrate the 'belly-button' of Hokkaido - Furano!

Funny Festival in Furano
Jul 2018
This festival held on July 28th and 29th each year in Furano, the town in central of Hokkaido. That's why it's named "belly button festival" or "heso matsuri". The event places near by Furano JR train station and starts in the evening with long dancing parade around 1-2 hour period. You can find local Japanese food and drink around the area.
