Before Udawalawe itself, we visited its Elefant "school" when the elephants were actually fed. It was really great to see all those young elephants. We spend the afternoon driving through the park with our guide that was very nice and told us really a lot of interesting facts. Even though we visited the park during the dry season, there were... We have been to this elephant national park several times with small groups. It never fails to impress. We love that the animals are wild, we can observe but cannot touch or interfere with at all. Apart from elephants there are crocodile, boar, buffalo, deer and many, many different birds. It is wonderful to just sit by a lagoon and... More

Taking a jeep through the dry lands of the park you get to see different animals. Mostly too shy to come close. We were lucky though to have a more or less hands on experience with elephants. Apparently that doesn't happen too often. A big herd crossed our path and another was next to the road feeding on branches. Lots... More

As part of our tour we had booked to stay at the Cinnamon Wild hotel which is in Yala National Park with the intention of seeing all the wildlife but the main reason was to witness elephants in the wild. Our driver advised that Yala is a lot bigger than Udawalawe and therefore it was likely we may not see... More

We came here 'just because' to try out the Sri Lankan 'safari'. We thought it might be neat, but we have all been on a 2 week safari in Kenya/Tanzania... a week in South Africa....we thought this would be nowhere near as good... how could it be, right? WOW were we EVER pleasantly surprised!!! We saw SO MANY elephants...closer and... More

Over 1000 elephants live in the park so yes you will see elephants but they are all showing signs of hunger with ribs and spines poking through. The non native species Lantana has taken over the grassland and to make matters worse allegedly 30000 cattle and domestic water buffalo are allowed to graze there.
