Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The castle of Rize, in its oldest nucleus - and highest in altitude - is estimated to date back to the time of Emperor Justinian, therefore to the 6th century AD.
However, very little remains of the original appearance. To the common visitor (like we were), the top floor delimited by the walls, arranged as a garden and equipped with bars and other venues, is visible above all.
The most striking feature of the castle is its panoramic site, which allows gorgeous views over the entire city and its gulf.

It's possible to easily walk from the town centre to the castle. It's a little steep in places. A taxi wouldn't be expensive it's so close.

There are nice views over Rize and the sea on the right, and on the left you can see tea plantations on the slopes. No patch of ground is unharvested wherever you go: sweet corn and tea plants are everywhere.

The Belediye have really excelled themselves with plenty of facilities for those seeking refreshments. It's very well cared for.

There is no entrance fee.

I took a turquoise dolmus up the hill for 2.5 lira and enjoyed some brunch and tea, enjoying the stunning view of the city and sea.

There's nothing much left of the fortifications, and it's certainly not the main attraction. It is all about the view, overlooking the Black Sea and Rize. There's also a memorial tomb on top.

The castle is perched on a hill with really good views of the coastline & surrounding area. You cut through the foyer of the mosque to get to it. Weather wasn't great when we visited as it was overcast. There is a nice tea garden which seems popular. Definitely worth visiting when in Rize!

The castle, which was built by the Genoese, is located at the top of a steep hill, wth few parking facilities. It has recently been restored and the parts available to visitors are used as a restaurant. The view from the ramparts is very impressive. The lower sections of the castle are still being renovated and cannot be visited.

Little left from the castle structure but part of the area is being turned to a cafe which is located at an elevated location. It provides a panoramic beautiful view of the Rize City.
