A visit to this stunningly beautiful abbey in Ettal is well worth it. The baroque interior is amazing. At the time we visited, the monks were singing the evening Gregorian chants, which was wonderful to hear and an added bonus.

Location 10km from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and 5km South-East from Oberammergau. In summer you can walk the forrest trail from Oberammergau to Ettal. (Hiking...More

This is a nice place to stop for a break, a picnic, a stroll through the admittedly limited grounds, a visit to the church (which is beautiful, you could spend hours deciphering the scenes from the Bible), or perusing the shops for monk-made goods. The...More

We stayed at a hotel across the street and a tour of the Abbey was included in our Globus Charming Europe tour. You could buy tickets for a tour. I know we got a private tour by a Benedictine Monk. The Abbey was old but...More

This baroque style Benedictine monastery is fabulous, built in the Middle Ages as a refuge for monks who were persecuted as a safe space, it has been occupied by the same order ever since, they made brandy to subsidize, not bad either. Edifice and surroundings...More

This was a total surprise just driving through town and stopped because we saw a massive dome. Unbelievable architecture. We actually watched a sermon and hymn singing. Worth a stop!
