Usk castle is (rather was) a lovely building but sadly it is not in the best conditions. It's privately owned and hence you can see chicken roaming around on the once glorious medieval grounds. However it's still worth a visit.

If you have an hour, or need a break on a journey then call into Usk Castle. It's only ruins but still sufficient to warrant a visit. Some parts dating from 1150, and on the Keep, there are 37 steps up to the tower. A...More

Ruins are more extensive than I imagined, with some of the towers nearly intact and several bits of the outside walls. Views are good over the River Usk and the town and surrounding countryside. A few chickens, pheasants and a sheep and lamb when we...More

Out for a drive and discovered Usk Castle. It's a lovely place of local history. No set fees just make a contribution upon entry. The weather was cold but dry and we had a lovely stroll around the grounds. Chickens, dogs, sheep and a cat...More

A blow the cobwebs away walk on NYD got the lungs working climbing the hill to view this ruin. Great views all around from the highest vantage point, though there was nothing else going on. Unless you are an historian, please don't go especially.

We love to visit castles, and this trip wasn't an exception. Usk was my favorite. It's privately owned, and has a quirky and personal touch. Most Welsh castles are grey rock rising out of sheep-mown grass. This has artwork, flowers, and friendly chickens. We really...More
