Awesome place to get away with terms no cell phone reception
Choose between walking to the top dam by parking in the bottom bar park may take a while or there is parking and toilet further up
Swimming or take a dip in ice cold water.
Take a track walk is also another option

Suspension Bridge Loop, Hunua Ranges
Jul 2018 • Family
July is the middle of winter in Auckland and is the time when Phillip has a two week school holiday break. We went to the Hunua ranges regional park and walked through Suspension Bridge Loop which takes one and a half hours from start to finish. This track starts with a suspension bridge which is made out of wood and there can only be 3 people on top of the bridge at same time for safety concerns. Before you enter the bridge make sure you use station to clean your shoes in order to prevent the Kauri Dieback disease from spreading to the native trees.

Loop hike around the Upper Mangatawhiri Reservoir
Jan 2018 • Couples
Features of this hike include the Dam, reservoir lake, scenic views from high points on Ernies track and lovely native forest. loop distance is about 18km. took us about 8.5hrs. (we are slow hikers)
about 60% of the loop is gravel, dirt road, so not too hard. The main difficulty is Ernies track. This section incorporates a rough up and down tramping track that can be muddy and steep in places. It includes a 1km downhill section where the elevation drops more than 300m if going in an anticlockwise direction. There is one wide stream crossing (about 8m wide, but shallow - approx 1ft deep) and several smaller ones . Good hiking boots are definietly required.

You can drive all the way up Moumoukai Rd to the dam carpark. Plenty of parking space next to the camping ground entrance. Free semi-decent toilets are located next to the camping ground entrance and there is a toilet at Piggotts campsite.

Had excellent weather. The scenic high point views are magnificent. It was a real challenging hike, but very rewarding. If i had to do this again, i would start earlier (say 8am from the dam carpark).
I would not do this hike if the weather was bad or had been wet recently.
