Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We have walked up this Clough a couple of times now. We have found it is best to walk up to the top and then take the tarmac country road back down to join the main road rather than the the return above the Clough which is quite steep and dangerous.

Try to research the natural history of the mills from the 1600's to 1800's. It will make the walk even more fascinating to think that hundreds of folk worked in this area in those times!

We walked here as we were staying nearby. We there is a small carpark for maybe 2 or 4 cars but their is also car parking nearby on the road. It was a damp day and part s once we reached the Reservoir and carried on uphill for the views but fine if you are reasonably fit and healthy!! Nice way to spend an hour or so

Having completed my excursion across Inchfield Pasture (well marked)I followed my route from Gorpley Reservoir to Todmorden . What seemed just a sliver of green on the map turned out to be a quaint woodland valley with a variety of deciduous trees just beginning to show autumnal colours. The stream and waterfalls were refreshing and the assortment of toadstools and bracket fungi brightened up the semi-shade. Go now.

We found this place by accident on TripAdvisor. What a hidden gem, a very small car park leads to a beautiful gorge waterfall walk. Keep it a secret!

Starting at Sharneyford walking alongside the river down towards Todmorden, the views are stunning, getting more interesting lower down as the valley narrows into the Gorpley Clough narrows. Lots of interesting photo shots of waterfalls. and wildlife. Finishing the walk at Gauxhome, with about a mile walk down to Todmorden centre for cafe's and food.

We live up Bacup Rd & like to walk up the track by the stream onto the hills.
Always looks good whatever the time of year.
The path is well looked after.

As you criss cross the stream, up the hill you rarely see many people and get to enjoy the place itself. The reservoir at the top is a real treat and I have been told there are fossils found from time to time on its shores.

Maybe I shouldn't mention this, as it was so good and we only saw one other person - don't want everyone rushing there. But it is a great place to walk. Go up through the clough, past waterfalls, and back down by the path through the green gate on the right for two very different experiences.

Gorpley Clough is a hidden gem that deserves to be better known. It is a lovely remote steep sided wooded valley (known locally as a Clough) that has a delightful upland stream that tumbles over a series of waterfalls and rapids. There is a small informal free car park (only takes a handful of cars) just off the Bacup Road, the entrance is low key and easy to miss. There is a Local Nature Reserve and also a Geological Trail, with Interpretation Boards providing an orientation map and information about what you will see. The site is managed by Yorkshire Water, who run Gorpley Reservoir and the Water Treatment Works which is on the open moorland high above the steep enclosed valley. A path leads steadily up from the car park entrance up this delightful stream, criss-crossing on wooden bridges, and going up steep steps that maybe slippery when wet, there are hand rails along steeper sections where needed. The tumbling stream and wooded valley are very photogenic, the area is great for birdwatching and wildlife spotting, and the cataracts and small waterfalls are a highlight.
The main path up is a public right of way footpath, which can form part of a longer 5 mile walk from Todmorden, featured in Walk 11 in the TodWalkers T Bus Walks around Todmorden booklet available for £1.50 from the Tourist Information Centre in town. There are a few simple wooden benches along the path where you can quietly sit and soak up the atmosphere and be at one with nature.
