The square is the only place with some space in the old town of Kos. In summer, it's far too hot during the daytime, but in the evening, the small shops and restaurants make it a pleasant site for eating, dwelling, shopping ecc.

A very picturesque square in the heart of Kos Town. Many shops, bars and restaurants lead off from the square, you can happily spend a couple of hours wandering around and taking in the sights.

Nice atmosphere, very friendly people. Hundreds of shops in old town which is a 2 minute walk further however they mostly sell the same things.

Free parking near the dolphin roundabout/harbour if you can find a space!

largest square in town and more or less the centre of the town. It is the start centre for most of the sites in town such as the Agora, the old town and a 2 minute walk to the fort, and Hippocrates tree. Lots of souvenir shops and restaurants , but the latter tend to a bit pricy and visitors would find cheaper alternatives just off the main square.

We wandered around, shopped for souvenirs, admired some old buildings (many of which are sadly in a heavily damaged stated due to the last earthquake) and headed to the Tree of Hippocrates & Neratzia Castle which are literally next door, and so is the I LOVE KOS sign as well.

It's hard to find parking here so most likely you will have to park somewhere away and walk down but then there is a lot here to see/walk around to, definitely good half a day to spend in this area of the island, if not more if you decide to visit various museums inside etc.

TIP: when parking make sure it's on the correct side as the sides change for different months and where the locals know it and ignore it we didn't get that lucky and found a 40 EURO ticket for parking on the wrong side of the street in a rental car...

The square is full of shops and bars, an ideal place to chill or shop.

It's also home to the spice market which offers a good selection of food and gifts.

While exploring Kos town we stopped here to eat. Relaxing service great. Right by the entrance to the old town and quaint old narrow street shopping.

In the centre of Kos town you will find this very attractive square. Great place to have a coffee and people watch.

Small market for gifts next to the church, which is a worth a visit.

Monday 28th and we were sightseeing and exploring Kos Town and the Old Town.

No exploration of Kos is complete without a visit to this main square of the Town. The Greek name of Platia Eleftherias, which translates to English as Freedom Square

Although laid in 1933, the Square is surrounded by historic buildings.  Along one side is The Casa del Fascio (Beam House), built as the local office of the Italian
National Fascist Party and a propaganda cinema. Now a cafe/restaurant, great place to sit to enjoy a drink with some food, relax and watch the world go by.

It was from the balcony of this building, on the 7th May 1948, the return of the Dodecanese islands to Greece was announced. There is plaque by the balcony to commemorate this historic event.

Along another side is the building of the Municipal Market of Kos, Kos Market Hall. The Cathedral of Kos beside it.

The Defterdar mosque, known as the Mosque of Kos, built in 1780. There is the old water fountain beside it.

A recent part of tragic history occurred on 21st July 2017 when an earthquake with magnitude of 6.7 hit in the region.

It wrecked havoc and the wonderful buildings in the Square were some of the casualties. The cathedral is now closed, the Mosque lost its tower, part of the restaurant building is closed.

Despite all of the horrors the Square is iconic, the heart of Kos Town.
