Department of Conservation camps are scattered around beautiful remote parts of NZ. Waikawau is very good, and I've been to a lot. It's close to the beach, has lots of shade camping possibilities, modern, clean amenities, and even a few powered sites.

Amazing place and amazing rock formations. We went in an RV and the last part of the drive was challenging - so take care. There is a small parking area before the tunnel but turning is tight.

A couple of us had wanted to visit this spot for a while - having been to the other two Waikawaus in NZ - and so we finally made a date for early April. We travelled from Otorohanga to the north and left via Awakino...More
