Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Barry is an excellent guide. I have been fly fishing for 55 years and recommend him without reservation. He is very personable, and extremely knowledgeable about the Matura and its Brown trout. Although conditions were not ideal on the day we fished (the river was high and a bit off color), Barry put us on fish all day long. That is the sign of a good guide; someone who knows how the fish will adapt to different conditions. When the fish were up, we caught them on small dries. When they were down, we caught them on a small nymph rig. Tight lines!

I found Barry's advert in the Gore town guide and was very glad I did, a half a day was booked in the midst of our holiday to sample the renowned New Zealand brown trout. Barry collected me in his very well equiped 4 x 4 and it was not long before we were in the water and fishing, after a few minutes making the transition from UK still water to the Matuara river we were soon into a fish expertly netted by Barry, photo'd and released. Several more followed and all to sudden my time was up, given the shoulder ache the next morning a half day was about right to start with! Next time Barry I will go into training and book for much longer.
I was impressed with the quality of the tackle, Loomis rods, quality waders that kept you dry and the lunch that was provided.
All in all a great day out with an altogether nice man and excellent river guide. Try Barry you will not regret it.

My friends and I have had the pleasure of going onto the river with Barry Perkins during three separate trips to Gore. Even when the fishing has been challenging (floods/winds/rain) Barry cheerful nature and fishing knowledge has been much appreciated. The evidence of his skill in putting us onto good fish are to be seen on the Facebook photo album. He and Diane have made us welcome on each occasion even when we've been accommodated elsewhere so I can confidently say we'll be back. I can highly recommend the guiding service and, from what I've seen, the B&B is first class.

I've fished with a lot of guides. Barry Perkins of Fly Fish Mataura is one of the best. His knowledge of the Mataura and surrounding rivers is excellent. He clearly worked hard to establish and maintain access to out of the way locations on the river the general public would have difficulty finding or getting to. If you want to catch fish in the Southland of New Zealand you need to hire Barry.

We’ve been living in New Zealand for several weeks. My wife is a fly fisherman and asked me several times to go with her. We had a free weekend and she signed us up to stay at the Wentworth Heights BnB and to spend a day fishing on the Mataura.
I had never made a cast so Barry gave me a lesson in the backyard. The next morning after a wonderful breakfast, he kitted us up and away we went. It was a lovely day. Barry taught us a lot about fishing, brown trout, local history, geography, geology and culture. I caught my first fish!
Barry’s experience, patience and calm and friendly demeanor made for a memorable experience.
I think I’d like to go again.

Our guide Barry was excellent over the one and a half days fishing. He put us onto fish, was there to help with any wind knots and nothing was too much trouble. Overall a great experience and one I will look forward to enjoying again in the future.

I'm pretty experienced, but knew a few local tips would stand me in good shape. Barry is a great man to spend a day fishing and chatting with, I caught quite a few fish, shared some great dry fly stealth moments, and reassured myself that the following few days on the river (Waikaia, it was local to where I was staying and a great river) would be productive: they were. Lovely lunch too. Many thanks Barry, my recommendation for any experienced fishermen new to this bit of NZ is that you'll really get the most out of your trip and enjoy a fine day's fishing.

We had such an incredible day fishing the Mataura river with Barry! It was truly a highlight of our stay in Gore and of our vacation in New Zealand. Barry was very easy going and was genuinely just as excited as us every time we had one on! He took us to some great spots that we definitely wouldn't have found on our own and helped with every tangle I had with a smile. The lunches were homemade and so delicious with hot tea/coffee to offer on a chilly day. We loved our day and would highly recommend booking with Barry!

As a fishing guide Barry Perkins really knows the Mataura River, and I had a great day with him as my guide. Barry first made sure my fishing gear was in order, that I had a license, and had appropriate clothing for a cool, cloudy day. The fishing started slowly, but picked up steadily as the day progressed. I liked the way Barry had me thoroughly covering the water with my casts. By late afternoon I figured that I had caught nine trout, but I didn't mention that to Barry. When I caught the tenth one, Barry shook my hand, and said: "Congratulations, that's ten trout in the net." I guess he was counting too. I haven't had many days as productive as that one. I fished nymphs almost the entire day, but I think that Barry sensed that I would enjoy casting a few dry flies, so I did that as well. We certainly got a full day in. I fished pretty much continuously until after 6 pm. Barry made the day a memorable one for me! That evening Barry directed me to five or so fishing access locations on the Mataura River near Gore that I could fish on my own after the day he guided me. In addition, he recommended other guides and rivers to fish elsewhere in New Zealand. If I get the chance to return to New Zealand and the Mataura River, Barry Perkins would be my choice as a fishing guide.

A friend and I were privileged to spend a special day fly fishing The Mataura with Barry Perkins. Barry knows his waters, his sport, and is the consummate guide to take you on the best brown trout water I have ever fished. He is extremely attentive to your style of fishing and whether you're an experienced angler or a novice, Barry style of guiding and teaching will make you a better fisherman. Barry s a strict conservationist towards these beautiful browns, and puts you onto the fish very quickly. A wonderful lunch provided by his wife Diane adds to the flavor of the day. We caught and released over 8 lovely browns, plus missed a number of hookups as well. We will fish with him again!
