Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed at Barry and Diane's magnificent bed and breakfast. Our room was spacious and had everything you could possibly want. The breakfast was 5 star with homemade jams, biscuits and seasonal produce.
Barry took us out on a windy day but he managed to keep us out of the wind. He's local knowledge was amazing.
Diane made us a beautiful lunch and we continued fishing until 630. They also helped us plan the rest of our holiday, so we didn't miss attractions that we would have without there recommendations. Can't wait to return as
so many of there visitors! We are hooked!

We worked out the other night that my friends and I first engaged Barry over ten years ago and been out with him most years since. Apr 2018 presented some huge challenges with wind and high/dirty rivers and Barry was great in re-arranging our schedule and locations to ensure the best experience. We particularly appreciated his taking us to fish his (and our) favourite river. His patience in ensuring we all got fish knows no bounds. Barry's skill and knowledge has always been the key to our success here.
I encourage everyone who visits this wonderful part of the world to get out on the water with him - regardless of your skill levels or absence of equipment (he can provide rods/waders at no extra cost). Just keep your fingers crossed that the lunch includes my favourite - Diane's bacon and egg pie 😁. Photo shows Barry recording a recent success 'on a river somewhere'.

It is always a pleasure to guide you Bill. Hard to believe it is over 10 years since we first hit the water together. Returning clients are our biggest compliment.

We started going to New Zealand to escape Montana winters an eventually bought a flat in Gore because of the fishing and wonderful people we met. The late Michael Roche introduced is to fly fishing on the Mataura and great fishing friends from Japan, Australia and the US. Big brown trout and huge mayfly hatches can be found during the season. Sadly we sold our flat there this year because we arn't up to the long travel time....we will really miss the Mataura and our friends.

Barry and Diane are great team. Dianne helped us with organising our visit and making sure wonderful meals and refreshments were provided. Barry was the teacher successfully introducing both my sons into the art of fly fishing in waters suitable for their tuition. They were already accomplished lure / bait fisherman and hunters, but with Barrys' guidance they were soon enthrawled with searching, stalking, and setting the hook in a number of beutiful brown trout. Barry is an ethical fisherman and after the celebratory photos the fish were released unharmed back to the mighty Mataura for the next guests. Diane and Barry are ex farmers and very knowledgable about their region which makes for very informative conversations - wonderful New Zealand ambasadors. We'll be back.

Thanks Bruce. We really enjoyed having your family to stay and fish with us. Lots of fun and a good result on the water. So nice to see a family travelling and enjoying each others company.

Barry is an absolute wealth of knowledge on the Mataura. He has the patience of Job unravelling our wind knots and putting us in touch with the fish. We have fished with Barry before and each trip we pick up another little piece. No matter how good you are a day with the top local guide is money well spent. Look forward to our next trip across the ditch. Stuart & Vicki.

Gore is reputed to be the Brown Trout Capital of NZ, and the huge trout sculpture on green at the entrance to the town is proof. The Mataura River runs through the town, and we fished it one day with Barry from Fly Fish Mataura. Barry is a very experienced guide who patiently steered us in the right direction. We had a good mayfly hatch and caught several nice browns on dry flies, although the big ones eluded us that day. This was a particular treat for me as I had previously done very little dry fly fishing, and it worked just the way it was supposed to! My only regret is that I didn't allocate some more time to fishing this great river. Maybe next trip.

My wife and I decided to try fly fishing in the South Island since I’ve experienced some of my best outings in the north island years ago.
Based on TripAdvisor’s reviews/recommendations we scheduled a one day outing with Barry. Our 2 nights stay with Dianne and Barry was a refreshing change from all the hotels we’ve stayed during our one month in NZ. We were welcomed into their home and made to feel like old friends.
During our outing Barry succeeded in having my wife catch and land 3 good sized brown trout on a flyrod.
My day also resulted in catching multiple fish...this was a truly memorable day in the river. I have not experienced this quality of fly fishing in our home water of the Pacific NW.
If you enjoy fly fishing, a day on the river with Barry is an experience you can’t miss.

Thanks Ian. It is always nice to fish those smaller streams which hold surprisingly large fish. More challenging but very rewarding. Already looking forward to next time.

It has now been our good fortune to fish with "Fly Fish Mataura" three times in the past three years. Each visit has been for two to three full days of fishing with Barry on the Mataura River and returning at the end of each day to the hospitality of the Wentworth Heights Bed and Breakfast owned by Barry and his wife Diane. The enjoyable time spent with Barry on the beautiful Mataura and the thrill of catching fish under his guidance have been so satisfying that we do not feel the need to cast the net wider for a different fishing location or guide. We look forward to being able to return a fourth time.

Barry is not only a highly skilled guide, he is also one of the nicest people I've ever met. We had a great time fishing with him and caught some beautiful fish. He was equally skilled at guiding me, a less experienced angler, and my husband, a very experienced angler. Highly recommended!

Does anyone in the area take folks for spin casting from a boat?
Sorry to be such a non-purist, but my wife doesn't fly fish
and I'm a novice at best...
Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred
It is illegal to fish from any floating device in the Mataura River, so wading or bank fishing only.
