Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We tried to find this cave in August 2020.
We stopped in at the Isitr at Punakaiki to ask for directions however they informed us that the cave is now closed due to it being unsafe after the Kaikoura earth quake.

We looked forward to this walk to visit a cave and the overhang. The brochures mentioned in some weather there may be a river crossing. The track is really rough and the terrain quite bland. There wasn’t much to see and enjoy. And then after 2 kms we came to a river about 200m wide and up to our knees in depth. This is the middle of summer and we didn’t feel like swimming so we went home quite disappointed. This is not really a walk track, I think it is an alternative route for people to get to the Fox River Cave. It was a bit of a let down for us.

Cave itself is not that brilliant so wouldn't recommend. It's quite a trek and the track has now been closed.

The walk is like everyone else said, slippery. Go slow on the incline decline section. The cave continues on to what looks like deep water but is only a few inches deep with good footing. It only goes to a narrow opening that you can't fit in (don't try, I did already for you). If you pack an un-inflated tube, blow it up and float back to the carpark! The swim is great on a warm day. There is no freedom camping but if you WWOOF, I highly recommend staying around Punakaiki and surfing with Dion (not for beginners). Enjoy

Unfortunately I went to visit this cave and it is closed due to a slid in the entrance. Always check the DOC for updates before going.

" 18 November 2016: Fox River Cave closed
The Fox River Cave, situated 3.7 km up from the Fox River carpark (12 km north of Punakaiki) has been closed due to a large slip at the cave entrance. "

This is a great spot for a hike and a visit to the caves if you have the time and are reasonably fit. Be careful around the caves and give yourself plenty of time, but this is a wonderful afternoon activity.

we did the first half hour of this walk, then turned back. the bush though quite nice was a bit repetitive and we were expecting more views of the river but the vegetation is quite thick and the track muddy in places. we were also not prepared for river crossings (apparently at the 1 hour mark ?) and forgot our torch, so it did not seem worth persevering

A well formed track leads to the cave. It is muddy in parts and after rain the rocks were very slippery. The cave is definitely worth the trip as is the surrounding gorge

The Fox River Cave is the area’s oldest tourist attraction where from 1906 until the 1950s visitors had to pay for a guide to take them. These days one can visit for free but you need to be prepared to cross rivers and climb slippery rocks towards the end of the walk. Other than that it is an easy and pleasant walk through West Coast bush that will take from an hour each way for fast walkers or 1.5 hours for those who like to take their time. The river sections were dry when we went in early February as there had been no rain for a few days but parts of the path were muddy.

As we had only one torch between us I did not go right into the cave with my partner but still saw some of the interesting rock formations. Some people were using their phones as torches which I would not recommend in case the battery dies while you are in there. You really need a good torch to get the best from the experience.

On our return the river provided a refreshing swim in one of the swimming holes and a weka introduced itself on the track. Even if you don't go in the cave it is still a very enjoyable walk.

Why nobody talk about it ? The track is a little bit sleepery but the caves are amazing. Just don't forget your headlight and high shoes. Water 50 cm deep. Need 6 hours.
