The walk is like everyone else said, slippery. Go slow on the incline decline section. The cave continues on to what looks like deep water but is only a few inches deep with good footing. It only goes to a narrow opening that you can't fit in (don't try, I did already for you). If you pack an un-inflated tube,... More

Unfortunately I went to visit this cave and it is closed due to a slid in the entrance. Always check the DOC for updates before going. This is a great spot for a hike and a visit to the caves if you have the time and are reasonably fit. Be careful around the caves and give yourself plenty of time, but this is a wonderful afternoon activity.

we did the first half hour of this walk, then turned back. the bush though quite nice was a bit repetitive and we were expecting more views of the river but the vegetation is quite thick and the track muddy in places. we were also not prepared for river crossings (apparently at the 1 hour mark ?) and forgot our... A well formed track leads to the cave. It is muddy in parts and after rain the rocks were very slippery. The cave is definitely worth the trip as is the surrounding gorge

The Fox River Cave is the area’s oldest tourist attraction where from 1906 until the 1950s visitors had to pay for a guide to take them. These days one can visit for free but you need to be prepared to cross rivers and climb slippery rocks towards the end of the walk. Other than that it is an easy and... More

Why nobody talk about it ? The track is a little bit sleepery but the caves are amazing. Just don't forget your headlight and high shoes. Water 50 cm deep. Need 6 hours.

Most walks in NZ give return times this one no it's one way. It stated 1hr 15min but really it took us 90min. (one way) This was a fantastic walk none the less. It's moderate grade, therefore you need to be aware that this walk has muddy tracks, climbing up and down rocks. The last 200 metres is a climb... More

I lived in NZ for many years so have hiked/tramped many miles in that beautiful country. Fox River is one of my favourites. Check river levels before you go and be prepared for rivers to swell. At the end of the trail is an amazing 'dance hall' cave. Don't miss it.

Located in Paparoa National Park, the Fox River Tourist Cave track is a must do, for anyone with an interesting in caving! While I moved fast and made it from the car park to the caves entrance in about an hour, the average walker should probably allow about 1.5 hours 1-way. There are two different rivers that you must ford... More
