We came across this cave when walking back from the blow holes and were quite excited to explore. It was a rather dark and gloomy affair ending in a small cavern.

A nice cave, try and remember a torch and you could explore more than I did. Worth a quick stop if your going to pancake rocks

Easy walkway down to the cave but you will need to bring your own torch/flashlight and good walking shoes. The rocks can be damp and slippery.

I have never been to a cavern and this is a good experience for me. If you want to fully explore the cavern, be prepared to get dirty. some parts of the cavern requires one to crawl or duck to very low levels. There is very little head room and might be difficult for giant size people. Definitely worth visiting... More

My husband and I explored the Punakaiki cave and it was really cool. We didn't have proper equipment but we're able to get pretty far back. Definitely recommend checking it out!

A cave along the road after the Pancake Rocks. Just make sure you bring a torch light if you want to go deep inside the cave...

So cool. You kind of have to head off to the right a bit to get to the part where there's a little Milky Way of worms across the cave ceiling.

Punakaiki cavern is signposted from the main road and just a couple of hundred metres from the visitor centre. Access is via some wooden steps and a short access track which was very muddy when we visited. We couldn't see any glow worms or fossils from near the entrance and the lights from our phone / tablet weren't strong enough... More

Delicious food and friendly staff. From the tavern you can start off several of the hikes. For example, Paparoa National Park Walk. My favorite walk was straight up the river.
