Found it by accident when we were doing a gorge walk in the area and walkig back along the road to the car. I gave it a high rating because it is so quick to do (5 minutes) if you just go into the start...More

We visited with two small children, 5 and 7, and had no idea what to expect from this free cave. The cavern is much bigger than expected. We just used the torch on the mobile phone. But a proper torch light would be good to...More

You can easily drive past without even knowing, thank goodness I read the reviews and please note there is little parking on the side of the road (parking beach side only). We had the cavern to ourselves and we got to have fun exploring, we...More

Punakaiki Cavern makes for a nice addition to a visit to the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. If you are waiting for the tide to come in and need to kill some time, or if you just want something else to do in the area, just head...More

This is a hidden little gem that the man at the DoC information centre told us about. Our four year old son had a great time exploring the cave, which goes back quite a distance from the opening.

We went at around 10:15 at night. When you first enter the cavern you don't see anything, but keep going further back into the cavern and you will see glow worms! Amazing to see them for free.

This is absolutely worth it! There are quite a few glowworms if you go deep enough. It was amazing! The cave was fun to explore and a great way to see glowworms for FREE!

Do the cave at night with a red headlamp to get the full effect of the worms. It's a little muddy inside.

Yes, I would say that's definitely doable. You could even carry your 2.5 yr old in, if you wanted to.
