Found this gem along Hwy 6 on the south Island and I am so glad I did. I've never been kayaking before but Ken & Jeanette at Punakaiki Canoes were so helpful and suited us up and we were out without a hitch. It was so beautiful on the river as you can see from the photos and a great... More

This was a great experience, the river is very beautiful and there were some exciting bits for people who are not used to river kayaking. It was so silent out there and the gear, while not new was fine and the owner helpful.

Big thanks to Owner Ken! Ken lives behind the kayak rent , push the red button on the front door to get in. friendly and helpful, don't ask how for you can go. you can go as far as you want, get out of your kayak ,climb over the trees, crawl under the rocks. don't be afraid to get wet.... More

The actual canoe trip is wonderful and a great experience. The scenery from the rivers is gorgeous and its actually quite and easy and relaxing paddle. However the owner is a very very grumpy and rude man. We asked very simple questions like how far up the river can we go and he answer to all our questions was "... More

Very relaxed outfit. Supplied with life vest and water boots (needed when walking in the river) in great condition. Also given a string to tie sunglasses and a container for the camera. Beautiful journey along the river. Lots of fun coming down the rapids, even though they were very small. Could only go so far up as it was blocked... More

We rented 3 kayaks today and started to paddle upstream. The river was like a mirror and it was beautiful! In the rapids it was hard work and we had to climb out of the kayak to lead it forward sometimes. When we got up about 1,5 km there was a fallen tree. We got around it but the rapid... More

Loved the trusting relaxed approach - sorted us out with great equipment (particularly liked the buoyancy aids). The Pororai is a stunning river to kayak - the scenery is straight out of a 'lost world' movie set. Some fun and challenges paddling up and down the rapids - or pulling the kayaks across the shallows. Well worth paddling out to... More

Loved the laid back operation here, had a fantastic paddle upstream, on one of the most breathtaking scenes you will ever experience. Fairy easy going at first, the further up you go,you get a few more rapids which we dragged kayaks easily around them. We had small children (4 and 6) they absolutely loved it and ended up learning how... More

This was such fun, the canoes are great, all the gear available, wet suits life jackets, boots etc, good value. Padding up the river was fun and at times we walked the canoes over shallow parts which all added to the experience. The bush and scenery are just awesome. Water clean and clear, fun to go thru some wee rapids.... More

This is a totally laid back Kiwi operation. Wander in from the road a couple of kilometers north of Punakaiki and the Pancake Rocks where the Pororari river crosses state highway 6 to find the two managers of Punakaiki Canoes waiting to get you geared up and on your way paddling up this fabulous river valley. The guys provide rubber... More
