Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very relaxed outfit. Supplied with life vest and water boots (needed when walking in the river) in great condition. Also given a string to tie sunglasses and a container for the camera. Beautiful journey along the river. Lots of fun coming down the rapids, even though they were very small. Could only go so far up as it was blocked by a tree but it didn't matter as it meant we could explore all the way back to the sea within the 2 hours.

We rented 3 kayaks today and started to paddle upstream. The river was like a mirror and it was beautiful! In the rapids it was hard work and we had to climb out of the kayak to lead it forward sometimes. When we got up about 1,5 km there was a fallen tree. We got around it but the rapid were to strong so we capsized... Twice...
We gave up, our 15-yearold was not amused... So after some trouble we went downstream again and down to the magic lagoon.
It was an awesome experience and a highlight of our vacation.

Loved the laid back operation here, had a fantastic paddle upstream, on one of the most breathtaking scenes you will ever experience. Fairy easy going at first, the further up you go,you get a few more rapids which we dragged kayaks easily around them. We had small children (4 and 6) they absolutely loved it and ended up learning how to paddle on the way back down. The water is so crystal clear you can see fish as you paddle along. We saw a lot of bird life and also a wild goat! Just awesome. All equipment you would expect was supplied, nice new life vests too which were great. We have been here several times without doing the kayaking, now wouldn't go past again without heading up!

This was such fun, the canoes are great, all the gear available, wet suits life jackets, boots etc, good value. Padding up the river was fun and at times we walked the canoes over shallow parts which all added to the experience. The bush and scenery are just awesome. Water clean and clear, fun to go thru some wee rapids. Well worth the experience.

Had a great time on the Pororari River with our family of four (including our two boys aged 11 and 8). Ken was pretty laid back and helpful, but not in your face at all. We had a beautiful day which really showed off the river and surrounding natural landscape at its very best. Even the upstream half of our trip was very manageable, although there were a couple of sections where we had to dismount and walk our kayaks due to shallows or (minor) rapids. Stunning part of the world and this is a fantastic way to see it - highly recommended.

45$ for 2 hours. Single or double kayaks are available. Make sure there is enough water in the river, before hiring a kayak.

My husband and I hired two kayaks for two hours in the early afternoon and were the only people on the river as you can go up the river without a guide. The 2 hours went by so quickly as we paddled up the river (getting out a couple of times to drag the kayaks over the shallows parts as we were there in low tide) admiring the beautiful scenery. It was fun to cruise back with the current. Very little effort was required in the form of paddling to go back to the kayak homebase. It felt like we were the only people on the river and the quiet was amazing. The man running the show was laid back and easy to chat to. Only $40 for the 2 hrs. I would love to go back again as this has been a highlight for me. Total relaxation in nature.

This river winds it's way through the most stunning rainforest scenery and experiencing it by kayak is perfect. You can stop paddling and just float along listening to the sounds of the jungle. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and were in awe of the scenery. Owner was friendly and helpful, we enjoyed this more than the pancake rocks!

I personally think the Porarari river is one of the most beautiful rivers in NZ, the scenery around here is stunning. Kayaking up and down the river was a great experience and lots of fun!

Is it safe for kids as young as 8 years old to canoe/kayak? All of us (2 adults & 4 kids) have no experience at all.

The business owner lives on the property- you just press the intercom button and he walks over. When we were there it was cold and rainy, we were the only ones but it was well worth it, beautiful scenery and not very taxing to paddle up stream. The owner is a pretty easy going guy and very funny too, if you show up with $$ I don't think he will turn you down. He watches tripadvisor though, I'm sure he will tell you if I'm mistaken. Have a blast!
