We walked from Te Nikau Retreat, went up the Pororari River and down the Punakaiki river, stopping off at the Punakaiki Tavern and Pancake Rocks on the way back to Te Nikau. Beautiful reflections on the river as the sun came over the top of the hills and tranquil walking through rainforest. A swing bridge towards the end and good... More

Very well formed and maintained track. Some steep sections so some degree of walking fitness would be advisable. Suitable walking shoes a MUST. The effort is worth it for the beauty of the native bush and birds!

A well marked trail along side the river, a very pleasant walk with a swing bridge which leads to longer hikes.

Of all the hikes we did in NZ, this one was among our favourites. It is not too strenuous, yet offers stunning views of the river while walking through a dense rainforest. Although we didn't complete the entire loop, we walked in and back from the carpark for about 2 hours. The carpark is just a short distance from the... More

Not very strenuous trek through a rainforest beside the river -- lovely for a short hike! We didn't do the loop, just went to the junction with the other track and back.

The track folows the river which provides several beautiful views at the river and the steep opposite shore. The path is well maintained which facilitates walking, but sometimes you have to expect to climb over tree trunks.

We did the Pororari River Track loop, which connects to a section of the Inland Track. We enjoyed both sections, although the Pororari River Track is more scenic. The problem with doing the loop, as one poster mentioned, is that the last part is along a gravel road and then for perhaps 30-60 minutes along Hy. 6 to get back... More

Walk along with the sound of rushing soothing water. So many shades of green and spectacular rock formations. You can really see the power of water here. It is worth the time.

We did the Punakaiki Village Loop Walk and really enjoyed it. We parked at Pancake Rocks, walked down along the road to the village then joined the river path there. It's mostly through forest and along the river, with the last portion (depending on which way you do it I suppose!) through fields and alongside the road. The sign says... More
