We visited Punakaki Rocks and then camped in our campervan in the car park where this trail starts. Very few people when we were there which was great. You will hike through a rainforest and follow the river for most of this hike. We went...More

The New Zealand bush is so varied and interesting. Some of the tracks were closed following cyclone Gita but this was still a very enjoyable walk with very varied flora, and we came across an enormous green stick insect.

I took this walk as far as the swing bridge and back, and it was well worth it. It was partly a river walk, but mainly a walk through the forest. The track was easy, provided you do not mind having to go up quite...More

Beautiful 1-km track through a gorge leading back to a suspension bridge. It is a short walk from the car park back to the track, which is well-groomed and easy to navigate. As the track makes its way through the gorge, it is surrounded by...More

An easy walk alongside the river, passing through woodland with many old trees draped with lichens. Shame you have to return by the same path.

Easy 1h track or 2h if you do the loop. Alternatively you can rent a kayak and do 1-3 of the root by paddling.

This was a beautiful walk and a must do in the area. Not too steep, for the bits that were uphill,I piggy backed my 5 year old when she started to get tired but there weren’t many of these and they weren’t long, she walked...More

Varied terrain and interesting things to see with forest and river. Most of it is through forest and is easy underfoot; we started from Punakaiki and so the last bit coming to the Pancake rocks was just dirt track, so not so enjoyable. Clearly signed...More
