This well-preserved chateau/castle/fort dominates the picturesque town of Vitre, which has many lovely (and often leaning) old half-timbered houses (“pans de bois”). The Chateau was initially from the 13th century but has had many additions. One can walk through most of the chateau, which now...More

An easy walk from anywhere in the city center. This is an amazing old castle that embodies the spirit of the medieval era. Well worth a visit!

Vitre is a very touristy town. The Chateau and museum are well worth a wander. Around every corner is a picture.

Both the town of Vitre, and its castle live up to the hype. The castle is like a set from Game of Thrones. It's been restored and is ongoing but left in its medieval condition with some period furniture. The whole area is magical- really!

We haven't buy tickets for the museums inside, as they were too expensive. The frontdesk person told us there were some furnished rooms, but somehow we weren't attracted by this. They usually propose a guided tour, but on that day (when we visited), there was...More

The Chateau from the outside is certainly very impressive and promises a building of huge historical significance... crossing over the drawbridge you emerge into the courtyard and........ well to be honest, that's your lot...... Sadly the promise doesn't last very long as there's actually nothing...More
