Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Must see and do in Waihi. Even though the main Martha mine pit isn’t working on the outside due to the slip they are working under ground. You get taken up to the processing mine and the detail and processes are very interesting. Would be cool if you go to go into the mineshaft to have a look but understandable the inductions for that would be horrendous.

Really wish we could have given a better rating for this tour. Our guide was lovely, but the content of the tour was very disappointing. The open mine is no longer in operation, so there is no more to see than what you would from the free walk-way in town. There is also very little to observe when the tour takes you to the mine site, where all the mining is now underground. You can only view from a long distance, and there's no way of getting any scale at all with the vehicles and equipment going into the mine. For so little to see, the tour went on for too long - almost 2 and a half hours. So we wouldn't recommend... we have been on many other mine tours in the States, and the UK, and this was poor in comparison.

We had a stop in Waihi while on our family Campervan holiday around the North Island. The tour was very informative and interesting. We enjoyed the interactive activities. The staff were helpful and we appreciated their input. We'd recommend this tour to anyone.

On our third visit to Waihi we had a longer stay so this was always on our list. We simply didn’t realise how integral to the town- and region- the mine is.

The guide was interesting and entertaining. The background and behind the scenes access was really interesting and educational and I cycled some of the area later to see more because of it.

Some younger kids on the tour were bored but perhaps weren’t kept engaged by their grandparents(?) who did seem to enjoy it.

In the pouring rain we were apprehensive about the tour. The guide adapted to the weather and showed us first the Martha pit which is impressively enormous. Then we were taken inside the working mine and showed and explained how the whole gold extraction process works. Good stories to keep us interested. Umbrellas provided and although we were outside much of the time we did not get wet.

Who would have thought that beyond the main street in town there is an open gold mine. We took in the film at the Ghost Theatre, before heading off on our bus tour around the mine's outer rim. Very interesting history of gold mining and very informative.

I visited with my two boys, 10 & 8, during the July school holidays. The tour was the perfect pace and length to hold their interest, with a good balance of information and getting out of the van to stretch legs and ask questions. I thought it was good value for a 2 hour tour, made even better by the 'free gold discovery centre admission' promo during the holidays. I definitely recommend the tour for families with children who're interested in natural sciences (& Minecraft!).

Thanks to Nikky, Murray and Eddie for this experience. The check in office has an awesome interactive experience into the history of mining in the Waihi area. So much information at hand, even before you get on the tour bus.
Once on the bus, we got a tour of the open cast mine which is the landmark of Waihi. Massive on a NZ scale but small by global standard. Murray gave an excellent visual and verbal barrage of info, which kept us all very interested. He has a very dry fatherly humour which was nice. After the pit viewing we went to the lookout which looks over the new underground drift. Plenty to see there, from water treatment, to the conveyor, to the various machinery in action. The drive around the mine area is eye opening, getting close up to view things in action. Be prepared for a 90-120 minute trip with no toilet stops once on the bus.

Great tour with Murray as our tour guide & driver.
Anything Murray didn't know about the mine, which wasn't much, he made up on the spot.
Karen at the iSite was great too, all of the team were very knowledgeable and keen to share their knowledge with their visitors.

This little town boasts a surprisingly sophisticated tourist attraction in the combination of the Waihi Gold Mine Tour and the Museum tour. Both experiences take around 2 1/2 hours and while suitable for people with limited mobility, there is some amount of stepping on and off the small bus that takes you to the still working mine.
Our guide was wonderful, full of information about the current operation of the mine, and the rich history of this town.
Back at the i-site, the museum was interactive, with wonderful special effects that you simply should not miss.
