Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

There are two campsites at Kai Iwi Lakes within the domain. One at Promenade Point and one where we stayed at Pine Beach.
There were only a half dozen other motorhomes there when we stayed (no campers in tents). The camp is right on the shore of a beautiful freshwater lake with clean white sand. It's very shallow at the edges so great for little kids, but it gets deep very quickly.
The amenities are not 5-Star, the campsite is quite remote from "civilisation" but recent improvements are some powered sites, and hot water showers available for a $2 coin. There are no kitchen facilities and no motorhome dump station.
It you want home comforts this is not the place for you, but if you want to see clean green New Zealand you will enjoy the peace and beauty of the lake and surrounding regenerating native bush. We loved it.

This is highly recommended for all ages, from just sitting and enjoying the view to walking along the waterfront, having a picnic or paddling, for serious swimmers it is perfect. You can also take your camper van and stay there for a very small fee. There are three lakes you can do water skiing, wind surfing and fishing.

The Kai Iwi Lakes are clear and beautiful, but the November weather was too cold for swimming. Our daughter enjoyed the playground. We took advantage of the good public (flush) toilets. We had a picnic lunch on a table hopping with English sparrows. Our lunch was interrupted by rain. Picnic shelters do not seem to be a priority in New Zealand parks.

Kai Iwi Lakes, 3 fresh water dune lakes clustered together with pristinely clear waters, colours that rival Bora Bora, once forested down to the waters edge but sadly no longer due to milling. The largest of the 3 lakes (Kai Iwi, Taharoa and Waikare), Lake Taharoa has 2 campgrounds (the only camping spots in this Reserve), Promenade Point, 400 sites, and Pine Beach (100 sites). We stayed at Promenade Point. Sadly it was unkempt and littered. Pine Beach, more remote was set further back from the lake but cleaner. Promenade Point had an ablution block which was clean, beware, hot showers come at $2 each.

The place has so much potential! But for some reason - perhaps because it is ran by the local council - it is very disappointing. The campground is very, very basic in what it offers. It is not well-maintained. Hot showers are rather expensive.
Do not recommend in general and if you decide to come it is advisable not to arrive at night. You don't see much and you get a bad feeling about the place. The bonus would be waking up in the morning and finding yourselves in a relaxing, gorgeous natural setting.

We stayed in the height of summer. Parked our Self contained motorhome right on the waters edge. Bliss. Kids didn't leave the water. No shelter now but the little trees are growing. Loved all the walks around the lakes. At the time of our visit iwi were debating whether to allow motor sports on the lake. I'm in two minds over this. Will be back again soon.

A special place - in 'off season'. Looks too busy from Labour weekend on/summer if you are after tranquility! Very friendly staff. Adequate toilet and shower facilities, used also by public who visit the foreshore. Take $2 coins for your 2 minute hot shower.
In wet conditions, motorhome/power areas can be wet underfoot - check your site before you drive on as we saw one camper get stuck and staff needed to tow vehicle out.
Credit to folk who made tracks that encircle Lakes Taharoa and Kai Iwi. The walk across farmland to Ripiro Beach is a must do, 2km each way, boots needed as boggy in places.
Thank you for a great 5 day stay.

Take the time to leave the main road and visit the Kai Iwi Lakes and you will be so surprised what you find. An amazing fresh water lake for swimming, boating and camping. It looks like a tropical island with the white sandy beaches and warm, crystal clear water. Have a swim and a picnic. It will leave you wanting to return. Dont miss this relatively unknown spot.
