DO NOT GO TO THIS FAKE “BISTRO” restaurant. PLEASE READ IN FULL!

This is a modern day scam, they have put together a bunch of words like “bistro” & “dog friendly” to a attract people. We have been to many bistro/hatted even Michelin stared restaurants in the world and had never come across anything as bad as this.

My wife and I went to this place with our dog as it was recommended to us a by a local who had been to this place 3 years ago. We drove 1hr from Christchurch to go through this disaster. It was our fault that we didn’t check the reviews prior as all the 1 star reviews from this year would’ve justified what I’m about to say.

Our dog is a friendly Labrador , he was on leash for the 1st 20 mins, but as we were asked to get comfortable by the front staff saying that they have another retriever there too, we then took our dog off the leash to have a sniff n play with their retriever. However our dog then entered the restaurant and the chef yelled at my wife saying “lady take your dog away” in a very rude manner. No “please”. Almost all the dog friendly restaurants we’ve been to have welcomed our dog with a treat and lots of pets. My wife was very disappointed but straight away apologised and leashed our dog.

We then went to a table at the back of the restaurant next to where they keep all their scrap metal ect. The only lady working as front staff then came and apologised for the incident and gave him some water. She was nice.

The arrogant bald headed chef then sent out the most disgusting two “bistro” dishes that I’ve ever come across in New Zealand. The scallop on pork belly had ZERO TASTE and was bland. The pork belly was as hard as a bark of wood.
The 2nd dish battered blue cod was a big joke . Once again bland - no taste and perfect example for using cheap low quality ingredients. The 1st dish was priced $49 and the $2nd I believe close to $40. Now I have dined in almost all the bistro restaurants in Christchurch such as Hilton , the George and few others and this was the most expensive.

I read in previous one star reviews for this place the owner/chef has shown his lack of professionalism by trying to argue to similar accusations, saying it’s inflation and that they always ask the customers if their happy with the food.
The restaurants I visited in the last 2 months had lower prices yet delivering A grade premium dishes.

15 mins in to eating the bald headed chef came to the table almost 10 meters away from ours , talked those guests, took their order, then stood there, looked at us and nodded his head and said all good? I was not in a mood to get down to his cheap level and give him a peace of my mind in front of his visitors. Therefore I nodded my head , paid the bill in full and left.

I now fully understand the reason for all the 1 star reviews here and also as to why these customers didn’t query or criticise their experience before leaving this place. That’s because the man who cooks/ owns/runs the place acts rude making it difficult to customer to express their opinions - (even on google, if you read reviews and owners replies).

I wish I could add something positive to the previous reviews on here but sadly our meals were probably the worst we've ever had at a restaurant, with extortionately inflated prices to add to the pain - the entrees of prawns and scallops were both okay-ish. Prime beef sirloin however was not what appeared at the table. For the price of $52, we expected something with a wow factor. The seasonal vegetables consisted of undercooked sliced kumara. I really cook way better than this at home. It's a real shame, as we have had such nice meals in the past at Fiddlers Green. The wine is always superb however. I agree with another reviewer, get a good chef in to cook decent meals or ditch the meals altogether for simple platters.

Colin appeared to be the sole member of staff on the evening we dined at Fiddlers Green. As a consequence he was acting as front of house, sommelier, cook and presumably, chief bottle washer. The wine was as expected and the wine list has an impressive choice. However the food was not. What sounded delicious on the menu was most disappointing on the plate. The price of the dishes was exorbitant for food we received and was nowhere near the fine dining experience we thought we going to experience at Fiddlers Green. This place desperately needs good front of house and a decent chef. We ate better for at a nearby pub on the following night at a quarter of the cost.

Something positive that I can say about the Fiddler's Green is that the owner was polite and welcoming. But now I have to get to the less pleasant stuff.

The best part of the meal was the entree of fried camembert that we shared ($21), which was, to its credit, inoffensive. It was downhill from there.

My blue-eye cod ($46) was equally inoffensive but I cannot say that about the anonymous, thick white sauce that camouflaged the rice. I did eat some of the two thin slices of sweet potato but left behind the three slices of tough carrot and the and two impressively attenuated lengths of asparagus.

My wife's cutlets - just two cutlets ($48) - were less successful than my fish. She had, and left, the same sides as I did, except that the rice was replaced by 5 pieces of well-fried gnocchi, which she also left.

We ordered desert, described as a chocolate torte. It was not. it was a piece of biscotti 1.5cm x 6cm with a generous serving of 6 walnuts , a scoop of vanilla ice cream and what I think was chocolate sauce from a bottle. ($18).

We had a 2018 pinot noir, which was cloudy. I drank mine (I'm a cheap drunk), my wife left hers untouched.

Our dinner cost $172.00.

Never again.

A big recommendation! Hospitable, great wines, beautiful sunset, delicious food and a nice place to stay with the campervan.

We were planning to stay one night with our campervan at this beautiful vineyard, but eventually we stayed an extra night because it was so lovely!

The first night the owner invited us over to watch a movie and have some delicious wine in the restaurant. Just what we needed after a long flight and rain. The day after we were planning to go further up north, however the owner invited us to their Thanksgiving with his family. We accepted his generous offer and enjoyed the tasteful meals and great wines. It was great!

Thanks for all! An experience we won't forget.

In summary the owner had no interest in being there to produce good food or to ensure his guests had an enjoyable experience. At best he was surly throughout our lunch time meal, but the lady who greet us was friendly. The food did not reflect the high price point and was more like poor pub food. I had blue cod fish in chips that cost $39 for a piece of frozen battered fish, green salad from a bag and fries which for the quality should have been around $26. A piece of sirloin was $52 dollars which was generous size but the food on the plate was average. The best thing about the visit was the lovely bottle of wine we had with our meal which was from another winery and willow the dog. It's annoying to promise a certain standard in your marketing but to get totally the opposite experience. Reading other reviews it appears other guests feel the same way.

We're a family road-tripping around the Canterbury region and came in for a bite seeing as most of the other vineyards in the area were closed. Gorgeous views and huge wide open spaces for our kids to run around with and play with the owners dog / pet alpacas.

Food was divine paired with the local wine. My wife had gotten the fish and I had the lam rack. Just a beautiful experience overall and will 100% be coming back here again.

Oct 2022 • Friends
restaurant for lunch with friends in July 2021 on the recommendation of another friend. We were a party of three ladies on our way to Christchurch and we had a lovely lunch with accompanying wine.
It was because of the previous experience that I booked lunch again with my partner and a close friend (who was having to travel two hours to get to us).
Our friend had arrived first and had been presented with a complimentary plate of very thinly sliced bread and a side of butter. I tried the bread and found it to be dry and rubbery. I didn’t send it back because pre-meal bread is something I am not enamoured of and as we weren’t paying for it, it was not an issue. Alas. This set the tone regarding the ensuing meals.
I ordered the pate. It was a tiny wee ramekin of pate with four slightly thicker slices of the same bread toasted and buttered. That too was rubbery and the toast cold. This dish was an entree and $19
My partner ordered the chilli prawns and was equally disappointed. They tasted very ‘fishy’ something prawns should not taste like. I tasted them and agreed and as a result, she could not eat them. Her scant lettuce side had a slimy piece of lettuce attached to it which obviously had been missed when the lettuce was rinsed and dried, if at all. This dish was an entree and $25.
Our friend ordered the scallop entree which were pan seared and served with a small piece of pork belly and several prawns. This was an entree and a whopping $36! Our friend was happy with her meal.
After finishing these meals, my partner ordered a classic apple crumble that came in a slightly bigger ramekin to that which the pate was served in and our friend had the chocolate torte. Both desserts were $18 each. The slice of torte was small, thin and impossible to get a spoon through and the dish was drowning in a sweet chocolate sauce.
My partner and I ordered a long black with runny cream on the side. We were quite specific in ordering the cream. The owner/chef came out and delivered our drinks explaining the cream as being fluffy? We remarked that we specifically asked for runny cream so he reluctantly returned back to the kitchen to replace it. You could’ve heard a pin drop when I asked for some hot water on the side as well.
I understand that his chef is no longer there and owing to staff shortages, he has had to grab the reins and get in the kitchen. He shouldn’t.
The quality and presentation of our food did not match the price we were charged. I was saddened by this experience more so given it was I who had so passionately recommended we dine there.
We are hearing more and more that there are staff shortages and as a result, this once ‘fine-dining’ establishment is probably feeling the pinch. In light of this, drop your prices to reflect the quality of what you are presenting and please be more attentive in your preparation, presentation and personality.
As an aside. The place has lost its love and needs a darn good clean and tidy.
Sadly for me, I won’t be back any time soon

I think they need to close or have platters an easier cheaper food... to have the owner cooking and charging high prices for meals isn't right. Wish we had walked out should have and unfortunately husband paid full price for the meal. Get a chef and start having nice meals and you can charge the price or stop cooking food altogether and or have some platters or easier food you can cook...would completely avoid altogether...shame as we have had some lovely meals there.
