Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Kurow is proud of its heritage, and this small local museum is a great look at life in times gone by. The hydro development and the origins of New Zealand's social security scheme take prominence, but there is a lot more about the area and its history. Displays are nicely presented.

It's great that this is free: even a small charge would make people not bother, and the opportunity would be lost to share some stories of Kurow and district. Well done to the organisers.

Knowing Kurow well back during the building of the Benmor Dam, decided to take a drive up there. Very friendly staff, and the museum is well worth a look.

The front of house staff are very friendly but the museum staff can be quite rude and very unhelpful. They do not want to share their time or information with people. I avoid interacting with them.

Stopped in here with our 3 & 5 yr old grandchildren. Great to be able to touch some of the exhibits. There are also some videos playing that talk about the area. There are also some local souvenirs to buy. according to the friendly lady in charge on the day said they get lots of overseas tourists. She as very friendly and knowledgeable and spent time to talk to us and gave the kids lollie pops.

What an enjoyable 1 hour we had at this small museum. The ladies volunteering were so friendly and helpful. It just had a do over and some exhibits were moved about but we had no problem in viewing them. It was like going back in time and honestly some of the items my wife and I had never seen and how they actually worked was a mystery. Everything was in good nick and the explanations were good. The two vacuum cleaners were a hoot! Well worth the short visit.
Also a huge thank you to Karen who took us down to St. Albans church and let us in for it was closed. We had a great chat with this warm hearted lady and that short visit made our day!

The website which I checked before heading south, says that the museum is open at the weekend. It wasn’t, I had planned my trip to detour in order to visit the “National Museum of Social Security” on a Saturday only to arrive to find it closed. I appreciate that it is staffed and managed by volunteers and that it could be difficult to open seven days a week but if it advertises itself as a national museum, then perhaps the weekend is not the best time to close if you are catering for tourists....and interested kiwis from away. I was sorry to miss something I really was keen to see. Please correct the website opening hours.
