Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Impressive statue of New Zealand's only VC and bar winner, with 3 information boards also. I'd read the most recent book about him, called Searching For Charlie, so wanted to see the statue.

The Memorial is on State Highway 1 in Amberley and the write up about Charles Upham is excellent.
Definitely worth stopping for.

New Zealand's most remarkable soldier well commemorated in this fine statue. Good interpretation panels. Easy access and photograph on Amberley main street.

Outside the Hurunui Council offices, looking off longing to the horizon is this moving tribute to a war hero. Being close to the public toilets & the Saturday Market site, means it is easily visited and allows us to remember those who fought for peace.

Charles Upham's wartime exploits are something I read about aged ten in the 1950's.

At that age in post war still bomb damaged London reading about someone killing Germans was good fun. When older and working with people who fought in the war it didn't seem like such good fun.

Many years later on reading about Charles Uphams' life you see that this was not a killer, this was someone preserving all that he considered descent in value and who after the war behaved as one would hope we all could, with decency to all and with modesty.

An example to us all.

A statue that shows one of New Zealand's great heroes. Without people like Sir Charles Upham who were prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow New Zealanders ( and King and Country) life as we know it might be a lot different. Nice to see this tribute to an awesome Kiwi

As a retired career solider Capt Charles Upham is unique in NZ Army history as his leadership and bravery are recognised as he has in effect been awarded two Victoria Cross's no other New Zealand servicemen has that achievement.

I am proud to have also served in the same military service as this iconic "Kiwi Soldier"

To now live in the same region as he grew up in is also special to me. JWH.
