Incredible Experience Beyond Expectation
Mar 2021
This was quite possibly the best travel experience I have had and that is saying something. The remote location and beauty of Tambo is beyond compare and that almost pales in comparison to the beauty of Johanne and her hospitality and kindness. I had been trained in Reiki online through the Covid crisis but came to Tambo to learn hands on from Johanne and honestly it took forever to write this review because trying to put words to this experience has been a challenge. I was called to this place. If you are open in your mind, soul, and heart, Tambo is the place that will change your life and Johanne is the spirit that will guide yours. And as if her knowledge of Reiki, Yoga, and Spiritual openness was not enough, you will not believe the quality of the food. I had no idea I could be so full and enjoy vegan food on this level. I had tried plant based diets and failed but with her recipes I am well on my way to a much cleaner system and life. Last but not least I have to mention the little touches. You won't be able to miss them - mandalas and coloring supplies, incense in your room, wake up beverage, all the little things add up to one giant heart. You will not regret this experience.

Tambo Ilusion: Nature lover's paradise
Nov 2018 • Couples
I visited Tambo Ilusion with my boyfriend Jorge on November 1st 2018 and stayed for 4 days and 5 nights. We absolutely loved staying here and would recommend it for people that truly appreciate nature and want to have a unique experience. Armando an Johanne are amazing individuals who truly care for society and humanity =). This spot is a MUST for adventurers and nature lovers!!

Pros: The service is excellent! The owner, Armando, is always available for any questions or special requirements. The cabins are very clean, the beds are comfortable, the cabin has a wonderful hammock, the food (only vegetarian!) is delicious, and the bathrooms are very well equipped and tidy. There is a natural lake for swimming and a path for exploring the conservation area (Armando usually takes you on a 1 hour walking tour of the forest and gardens). The scenery is beautiful and you feel like you are in the middle of the jungle in spite of being only 15 minutes away from the city. There are many relaxing activities such as Yoga, Reiki, Massages, Cooking classes, Detox programs, etc. which are led by Armando's wife, Johanne.

Cons: Tambo Ilusion is NOT a place for everybody. It is a place for people that love to be surrounded by nature and are looking to get away from the city noise and technology. It is dark at night and to walk from the cabin to the bathrooms or dining room, you must have a flashlight. No Wifi, no electricity in the cabins (you can charge your phone in the dining room), no air conditioning or fans, cabins do not have private bathrooms, no bottled drinks (soda, energy drinks, etc), and no meat (all meals are vegetarian).

Helpful tips: Bring a head flashlight, pants and long sleeve shirts (mosquitoes can be brutal), comfortable walking or hiking shoes, bathing suit, sandals, hat, sun screen, repellent, water bottle, sunglasses, a good book, and small treats if you have a sweet tooth like mine.

What we did: We selected the 4d/3n Viva la Conservacion program. On our first two days we explored the waterfalls of Carpishuyacu and Ahuashiyacu and the Blue Lake of Sauce. Armando kindly arranged these two tours for us which were additional to our program. On our third day we went for a hike to the river with Armando (about 4 hours, included in the program) where we met a local farmer, swam in the river and had a beer in a small town. On our fourth day we walked through the forest of Tambo Ilusion and the gardens with Armando.

This spot is a must for adventure seekers and nature lovers from all over the world! We definitely recommend staying in this beautiful oasis in the middle of the jungle =).

What a pleasure it is to read your review. Thank you so much for writing such a detailed and thorough testimonial Viajandocaracol. We are thrilled that you 'absolutely loved staying here' and that you recommend other readers who are adventurers and who love nature (I would add wellness seekers to the list) to come live the 'Tambo Ilusión experience'! We are happy to offer our guests a tech cleanse, a digital detox while they are here. It is so beneficial to disconnect from those and connect with nature. We witness the benefits in all of our guests who leave here rested, rejuvenated and inspired! There is something romantic about candle light and sleeping under a mosquito net. Plus, listening to the sounds of nature as one falls asleep is so magical. This is what we want to share with our guests. Time slows down at Tambo Ilusión! Thank you for recommending Tambo Ilusión, our little paradise so highly. We look forward to your next visit. Johanne looks forward to share her passion for yoga with you! Kindest regards, Johanne and Armando

Absolutely Enchanting!! <3

Wow! I was fortunate enough to stumble upon this gem after searching through tons of other options. I chose Tambo Ilusion because it was within my price range and I received a beautiful, life changing experience. Johanne and Armando have created a beautiful sanctuary in the middle of the Tarapoto Jungle. The property is wonderful and the cottages are very comfortable. Waking up to the sound of rain in the night was soul soothing! Johanne was dedicated to yoga twice a day for two hours, her style encouraged further relaxation, her meal choices are AMAZING! I was able to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and simply reflect while detoxing with her DELICIOUS vegetarian options. Johanne is an amazing chief, she even shared her cookbook with me. In between yoga Johanne showed me how to cook some of her favorite recipes, including super food smoothies. Her knowledge of food and the psychology of why people eat the way they do is very impressive, she sat down with me and offered great pointers on how I can better improve my daily eating habits. Armando took me on an amazing nature walk of the property where so many amazing animals and plant species call home. He so humbly referred to it as his “garden” when in fact it is a beautiful piece of earth that he has spent over 30 years growing and caring for. His love and dedication to his “garden” is inspiring and admirable. Johanne and Armando scheduled additional events that were fun and entertaining, including site seeing tours, massages, and life changing Shaman ceremonies. The ONLY thing I didn’t like about Tambo Ilusion was leaving! Johanne and Armando were so kind I didn’t want to leave! I can’t wait for my next retreat at Tambo Ilusion so sweet Johanne can once again wake me up with a lovely cup of warm lemon water! =) From the bottom of my heart, Johanne and Armando, Thank You for everything! Perfection!

Tambo Ilusion Rocks!!!
Nov 2016 • Solo
From day 1 to day 21, I always felt that I was surrounded by special people in a very special place. I was welcomed at the Tarapoto airport and wasted no time in settling in. I experienced my first of four Ayahuasca ceremonies on day 2 and it was transformational and expansive ( note: not expensive!) The food was loving and creatively prepared by Johanne and only enhanced being in the middle of a natural paradise. I look forward to my return visit and recommend without hesitation to anyone......once in your lifetime, experience the love Tambo Ilusion! I guarantee you'll bring alot back with you!

Oasis minutes away from Tarapoto center
Dec 2016 • Family
My wife, 2-month baby and I stayed 2 nights in one of their lovely cabins and we loved it. A world away, minimum electricity at night (bathrooms, dining), solar lights guiding you home (I would suggest headlamps), cabins nicely spaced with the requisite hammock. The lagoon is amazing, so refreshing and so true that no bugs there even at sundown!

MOnkeys in the trees, crickets at night, and stars stars stars.

We didn't do yoga or ceremonies but that would just amplify the experience. If you can also hear their story it's well worth it to understand that your hosts are quite dedicated.

You could almost say we were glamping as the thing that even the thing I start to miss when getting away from it all, nice bathrooms, they have covered. They are gorgeous, and I'm not exaggerating.

I would only say that their food offerings are vegetarian/vegan (they did have eggs) and there is not an expansive menu. However they work with you and you can choose options in the morning and they will prepare them at night.

Overall, magical stay.

Hello Arto B Greetings from Tarapoto and thanks for the great review. We really appreciate you taking the time to write such a complete report of your stay. Very helpful for future guests. Thanks for the praise on the installations, the beauty of the natural surroundings, etc. We are so very happy that you had a wonderful experiencing the "Tambo Ilusión experience"! Glamping (to camp in style, comfort, and/or luxury while still experiencing the great outdoors) is a great way to describe the experience we offer! The cabins are rustic and quaint and have very comfortable beds yet one has the feeling of camping because of the close contact with nature (the sounds, the breeze...). One gets to reconnect with nature and get restful sleep. The food which is lovingly prepared for our guests is vegetarian, yes we do offer eggs! There is no restaurant at Tambo Ilusión. For our guests, we prepare homemade wholesome meals. We take into account food restrictions and allergies. There is no doubt that eating a vegetarian diet for the duration of our guests' stay is beneficial for them and the planet! We enjoy giving our guests the experience of discovering how vegetarian meals can be varied, delicious and satisfying. Thank you again and we hope to see you here for another visit soon. Kindest regards, Johanne and Armando

WONDERLAND
Jan 2017
I left Lima with the only intention to participate in a Yoga Retreat and receive the New Years helped and motivated by the Asana's.
I was so lucky to have found a place that gives you so much in just a few days.
Johanna is not only a Yoga instructor, she is a spiritual guide, a kind and devoted one.
She is a great nutritionist so while you are breathing your fears away your body is expelling toxins
without suffering from hanger at all.
Armando is responsable for the amazing sustainability project the have developed in Tambo Ilusion, not only the place is Beautiful but it is Meaningful. He is recuperating Animals , plants and trees that otherwise would be "eaten" by irresponsable construction developments.
They are a simple yet sophisticated couple with a mission and they have an extraordinary network of shamans and curanderos that help you with your different issues .
It is a life changing wonderful experience I recommend

Transformative experience
Sep 2016 • Solo
I did the 5 days jungle yoga vacation retreat, I don't know where to start this review as it was 10/10 for me. It was just amazing. I wanted to do more than one retreat in a row (the vegetarian cooking retreat, the Reiki level 1 initiation retreat and the detox & yoga retreat offered at Tambo Ilusion) but I had run out of travel time. All the retreats look amazing and after visiting I want to do them even more! Tambo IIusion was beautiful and Armando and his team do an amazing job at keeping it protected and conserved. It was very inspiring to see and meet someone so dedicated to protecting and conserving his land.

The weather was very hot (September being the hottest time of the year in this area) so don't forget some cooler clothing but also remember to bring long cloths for mosquitos. Don't forget your swimmers either because the lagoon they have is so so so relaxing, you can't not get in it!! I only wore bug spray once on the trek and only gotten bitten once by a sand fly so bonus of this area is the mosquitos aren't crazy. You just need to wear socks and long cloths early morning and early evening. The yoga was in depth and Johanne was an amazing teacher. She is so descriptive and calm. She has so much knowledge and patience to be able to create an amazing schedule for you and I can see she can customize depending on participant’s level. I have learned so much good stuff from her that will stay with me forever. I have already been to a few classes since I got back home and honestly nothing compares to Johannes teaching! I also received Reiki from Johanne which was incredible and she also “Reikied” my room after I had some bad dreams the night before.

I had fresh lemon tea brought to my cabin each morning by Johanne which was a great start to the day. The food was amazing cooked by Daniel and Gabriella. The meals were created with love and passion, they were absolutely delicious. On my last day I also got to prepare a breakfast with Johanne and it was an amazing end to my stay. I've come home very inspired to eat better, live better and do the thing I love doing more. I’m definitely continuing my yoga practice! This experience was more than I could have asked for and I really hope to return one day! My stay at Tambo was an amazing way to finish my 5 week trip in Peru by attending the yoga retreat and delving deeply into mind body and spirit connection. I'm appreciating my experience even more now that I'm home. Would highly recommend :)

Dear SamVau, Greetings from Tarapoto! Wow, thank you so much for your awesome review. It is very motivating to get such positive feedback! It is thanks to Armando's vision to protect his beloved property for over 30 years that Tambo Ilusión Retreat Center exists and it is rewarding to read that our guests appreciate his dedication and perseverance at taking care and protecting this beautiful property. All those years he dreamed of receiving guests and his dream, his vision has come true. We are very grateful that our guests love the experience they live here. We do offer various retreats for our guests to take advantage of the site: vegetarian cooking and yoga retreats, detox retreats, Reiki initiation retreats, our 5 day yoga retreat as well as Armando's programs called "Viva la Conservation". All programs are much appreciated. You are not the first to have had difficulty making a choice of which program to participate in! We do hope you will return to experience our other programs! Johanne is so pleased to hear how much you appreciated her yoga classes. It is a pleasure for Johanne to share her passion with guests to help them feel more grounded and relaxed, improve their breathing and their posture, etc. We are thrilled that you took home some of the healthy habits that you started to put into place during your stay with us. We love to plant seeds and let them grow! Thank you so much for your lovely visit and for taking the time to share your experience in such detail on TripAdvisor. We would love to have you back for our other retreats! Until then! Kindest regards, Johanne and Armando

Blissful Serenity
Sep 2016 • Solo
After a magical couple of weeks in the jungle it was always going to
be difficult trying to integrate back into "real life". Well i found
the most perfect way to do so... ! Tambo Ilusion topped with Johanne
and Armando's flawless hospitality was the perfect end to a magical
trip to Peru.

I booked the Viva la conservación 4D/3N program which suited me well.
I did plan to but unfortunately did not during this visit join Armando
on his 4 hour hike - I was not in 100% health to do so. Another guest
did attend and was more than happy with her adventure. Next time
Armando I promise!

All the (veg) meals included were magnificent and very suitable for
anyone post dieta, i didnt have to think about anything as I was
looked after very well by all. There are a number of other services
such as yoga and reiki offered by Tambo Ilusion but for my visit the
hammock and lagoon was all my heart body and soul needed.

My soul is so much richer for staying here and my body much more
relaxed. There is a lot of love put into this property. If you want to
switch off from the rat race and get close to nature Tambo Ilusion has
everything you need.

Quiet Getaway
Jun 2016 • Solo
Pros: Lovely rooms/cabins with comfortable beds and hammocks! The food was great, especially considering I am not vegetarian and all the food was vegetarian (except the eggs that the cook/son kindly made me for breakfast). If you're looking for a nice place for a quiet getaway that is not terribly far away from the city, this will be great! I signed up for the "Viva la Conservacion" program, so can only speak to that program but I hear the other programs (yoga and such) are great. The staff/owners are also pretty friendly, though not likely to sit down and talk with you and share meals and such - which if you're looking for your own space and privacy, that will work to your advantage.

Cons: For $175, I basically just got 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch, a room for 2 nights and a 1.5 hour guided tour of part of the forest on their land. I was expecting somehow a bit more, like access to taking yoga classes during my stay (which were not available), and to learn about bee keeping and worm composting (which they also were not doing). I was expecting to engage in these activities, so when they were not available, there wasn't much else to do with my time other than just sit around and read and reflect. Granted, this is a retreat center and I was able to take comfort in that and make the most of it. This is also small conservation area (which they openly admit), so there isn't exactly a lot of lush environment to observe and take in. Usually noise from the surrounding area was not a problem but at night you can sometimes here music in the distance coming from Tarapoto or chainsaws or incessantly crowing roosters. But in general, the atmosphere is very tranquil and peaceful.

Hello John M We appreciate you taking the time to write a detailed review of your experience here. As you were the only guest here at the time, there were no yoga sessions scheduled but private lessons are available on demand. Johanne would have been happy to give you a private yoga lesson. With respect with the worm composting and beekeeping, we are in the process of moving these activities to another part of the property to make more space for the medicinal plant garden that is being expanded. We are sorry that your expectations were not met in that regard and I will update our webpage on this matter. As we are located in the countryside yet close to the city, one cannot expect to find complete silence at all times here yet Tambo Ilusion offers a peaceful environment that permits one to rest and relax. We enjoy hearing from a non-vegetarian that the vegetarian meals were great! Vegetarians do eat eggs and are part of our menu. We hope the next time you are in the area, you will come and visit us again to see the advancements of the medicinal plant garden as well as the beekeeping and worm raising activities. Gracias!
