Anyone who studies St. Francis of Assisi, or St. Clare of Assisi needs to know about the key role of the Porziuncola. It is worth reading about ahead of time, or having a tour guide explain. It has the feeling of a very holy place....More

This is where St Francis meditated, started an order and preached simplicity. Now it sits inside a gaudy overdone Cathedral with baubles for sale. The night we visited, it was so busy and the line to the Porziuncola so long and people then staying in...More

Assisi was special to me for its beauty and age and spiritual legacy. To be able to see and touch this small, incredibly historic church building amidst all the grandeur of the many cathedrals was very moving.

The original church of St Francis of Assisi is housed here inside of a beautiful cathedral and is absolutely amazing. We were fortunate when a Franciscan brother approached us to explain the history and allow us to ask him questions.

This was a must site to visit on our simple mini-pilgrimage to experience the 'spirit' of Francis, Clare and their companions. We took the train from Rome to Assisi and found that the Porziuncola, a church repaired by Francis, was just a short walk from...More

This is a beautiful yet tiny little church that is found within the Santa Maria Degli Angele basilica. It captures the spirit of St. Francis and his life of simplicity. Yet is surrounded by a much more ornate church. Impressive!

When inside the Little Church, look up to the ceiling..what you see is the simple and unadorned wall, so befitting of Saint Francis.

This is actually a small church within a much larger church. Impressive. Be sure to go out the right door and see the rose garden and other structures within the church.

This is where you will find St. Francis' spirit. Mass is well attended, unlike other churches all over Italy. Find St. Francis' statue which the doves never leave. Walk through the chapel built over the spot where he died. A beautiful faith experience.

Visiting the Museo della Porziuncola transports you to another era. There are video displays in several languages within the Museo that provide brief outlines of historical, religious and cultural frameworks for the Porziuncola and St. Francis's experience and context of his followers. There are several...More
