This is a very popular tramp in the Tararuas largely because it gets above the tree line. It can be done in a day but I would take two, staying at Jumbo Hut which is not usually as crowded as Powell. Always be prepared to not go over the tops if the weather is inclement, which it frequently is

A beautiful area with many walks to choose from plus popular huts of overnight hiking etc. Very picturesque & worth a visit. We just went to Rocky Lookout for a short, hilly hike. Loved it!
