Binoculars and telescopic lenses are a must. We hung in the hide for an hour or so toward dusk and saw 3 penguins. We had an enjoyable time interacting with people from around the world and sharing experiences as we waited. It's a good way...More

Excellent viewing for Yellow-eyed penguin ....if you want are patient and time it right. Bit frustrating to see people on the beach in spite of the information displayed. We saw 1 come across the beach at 3:06 pm. Any time from 4-7 can be productive...More

Worth checking out but highly recommend binoculars if you have them as you cannot go on the beach through the warmer months & can only view them from the “hide” building on the mountain. There’s apparently 14 or so penguins in the bay who live...More

It was very exciting to see two yellow eyed penguins come ashore. We went at about 7:30 and saw them at about 8:00. You never know exactly when they might come so you need to be patient. Don't expect to see large numbers of penguins....More

Nice sealed road in to the small free car park area, with a toilet there. The tourist numbers have definitely increased over the years, and this may have caused reductions in the penguin population, especially with beach access granted during certain times of day. We...More
