I remember doing this it was amazing. I can't remember but I think I mightve had someone named Olivia do ours. She carried most of our packs since we were probably ill equipped. Anyways it was pretty cool and my sister wouldnt have been able to do it without Olivia

We had already finished our Tongariro Alpine Crossing on 3 April 2021.
We are a group of 4, with different ages and hiking experiences. We did research, physical training before the trip. However, we strongly believed that a guided walk is the smartest decision we made.
We are so glad to have an excellent service provided by Terry Blumhardt. Before the crossing, Terry replied to our inquiries promptly with clear instruction & information.
On the day of the walk, Terry is our guide who demonstrated his expertise to ensure our safety. With his advice, guidance, and support, we were going through the tough moment safely with confidence. In the end, we found that we learned more about Tongariro from him and the crossing is so unforgettable for us.
Honestly, Tongariro Alpine Crossing is quite physically challenging for any one of us, we highly recommended having a professional guide and Terry’s team is no doubt the only option.

We had a fantastic experience!! We were guided by Terry Blumhardt. He was amazing!! Looked after us and our group of 8 so we’ll. Always checking in us helping us get through the tough parts because there are hard parts😀 showed us how to get down the slippery slopes by the lakes.
Can’t thank him enough for looking after us so well and helping us to have an amazing experience

Stunning varied alpine terrain made this crossing a beautiful challenge for a mature couple of urban walkers ; it has to be up there as a pinnacle experience. The tour guide's professionalism and local knowledge on everything was priceless and we knew we were in the best hands.

It was so good we did it a 2nd time. Once in the summer and then in the winter. Having a guide is the best way to do this. All the logistics are taken care of down to the boots/clothing/polls, all transport was put on door-to-door. From the end of the trail, it was only 20min back to River Birches. It is great to get to learn about the myths/legends/spirituality plus geological and historical aspects. Plus the guide made it feel safe as things can change quickly in the alpine informant. We are looking forward to going guided once again.

Thank you Terry for accommodating our requirements, for your passion and professionalism. You kitted us out with everything we were missing to ensure we stayed warm and safe and when I saw the boots you provided were the same as worn by the guide, who has done hundreds of crossings, I knew you weren’t cutting corners and were delivering a quality experience. I hope the Kiwis help support your fantastic service and get to experience these incredible sights for themselves (with your help of course).
And a huge thank you to Julian for guiding us so professionally and safely as well as being a great companion for 8 hours. He made the day fly by and we loved it. A great asset to the Company. I’m sure the 2 Argentinian ladies we came across in distress and who you helped save, (not in our group and inadequately prepared), would like to thank him too, they’d probably still be stuck up there if it wasn’t for your assistance.
Great day, worth every penny.

The best day with a fantastic guide Julian!
My wife and i recently returned back to NZ and decided to see a bit more of the country, we had both done the crossing before but back in high school which was quite a few years ago.
The day was absolutely perfect, the weather was great, but what made the crossing great was Julian. His knowledge on the area, the bush, birds, and Maori history was truly impressive. He couldn't have been more professional and always had our safety in mind.
Terry was great to organise the trip with, and made the whole experience so easy. I can't recommend these guys enough.
A small tip, try stay in Turangi after the hike and avoid heading back to Taupo

With Covid19 heavily limiting tourist number in NZ we wanted to support the industry so booked a guided crossing with Terry at Tongariro Guided Walks, something we have been wanting to do for many years. The day was perfect. The weather was great, we met our Guide Cam in Turangi and were driven to the start of the track. Cam was professional and informative from the outset. The scenery was out of this world and the time flew by with good chat. After 6.5hours we arrived at the end of the track a little more weary than when we started but feeling very satisfied to have completed the crossing. A huge thank you to Terry and Cam for making the day effortless.

We had a wonderful day doing the crossing with our guide Cam. He was experienced, fun, knowledgeable and always made sure we were ok during the more challenging parts of the hike. Terry drove us to the starting point and picked us up at the end, and made sure that the trip was Covid-conscious, providing us with hand sanitizer and masks for the journey. Views from the crossing are just amazing and having Cam as a guide made for a relaxed day of walking where all we had to worry about was taking in the incredible scenery. Would certainly recommend.

May I know if the company is still active?
I can't visit the website anymore (not sure why) and there is no email reply which I left two days ago
Would like to check if I can join the guided tour in end feb
Hi
We are still operating much better than our website! We are changing over to a new website and this has resulted in a painful glitch in emails etc, so there have been delays etc that we did not want or anticipate. I will try to clear the backlog when it appears. We have good availability during late February. Thanks for your patience.

May I know if this company is still active? I can't login to the company website now and I emailed them with no reply till now?
Hi. We have been upgrading our website and have experienced a few glitches along the way. Yes we are still operating and aiming to improve the communication. Evenings are the best time to catch us.

Is this company still active? I have emailed and sent a Facebook message but received no response?

There are reviews posted three to four weeks ago on Tripadvisor. I would be surprised if the company was not active as we used them and they get great reviews. As it is winter in New Zealand perhaps Terry is taking a break.
You could try getting in contact with the i-Site visitor centre at Turangi, they may have some information.

The website describes this hike as "challenging". Could visitors in their late 60s with average health, or visitors with knee problems handle it? Are there alternatives to hiking?
Hi Aree
We list the Tongariro Alpine Crossing as we want people to take notice that it is 19.4km long, with almost 800m of climb and 1100m of descent. By doing so we hope that people can compare it to things that they have done in the past.
It takes all day. We are not into rushing people across the mountain, that is not our style, we spend time allowing people to take photos and explain to them what they are looking at. That being said, we also understand that the longer we take, every minute adds to the energy expended. If the thought of spending 7-8 hours on your feet seems intimidating, then going more slowly to compensate for a lack of "puff" will only mean 8 - 9 hours on your feet.
Fitness is hard to quantify, as is age (one of our fastest trips was with a 70 year old from Japan). If you do not like the sound of only sitting down for half an hour at lunch time, then maybe another 15 minute sit down a bit later on, spending the majority of the afternoon resisting gravity (walking downhill), then maybe consider one of the numerous other walks that we offer in Tongariro National Park. We have full day walks of less up and down, or shorter walks that we can add together to make up a full day of hiking. Check out our Tongariro Guided Walks website
Cheers

Hi, KathleenM. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Is there any snow left on the tral n January?
Hi. The snow is gone from the track now (early December 2017), with patches visible up on neighbouring Mt Ngauruhoe, so it adds nice contrast to photos.
