Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful beach but for a even more beautiful view do the Mount Pauanui Summit Walk, this will take you about 1.5 to 2 hours return trip. Would only recommend this walk for the actively fit as this walk is quite steep with lots of rocks and tree root obstacles. Once you get to the top you will realise how worthwhile the trek was!

Standing on the surfs edge enjoying its cooling charms letting my feet sink into the soft white sand, I enjoyed a serene moment of appreciation for the magic surrounding me. Kids mastering their body boards as they became one with the energy of the waves, more child-friendly than many others on the Coromandel. Shouts of delight, laughter and fun all presided over by the capable life guards confident in their stance, eyes duty bound to the sea. Outside the flags surfers ride the waves looking both proficient and newly learned. Distant boats make their way to and from the estuary wharf. Classic aircraft launching over the beach from the airfield nearby offering sweet lament for times past, cockpit daredevils thrill & entertain with acrobatics in the skies. Room for many, so there is always space. Holiday makers & locals all eloquent in their respect, bikes, carts, trolleys all left unattended on the grass verge presiding over the beach, no fear of property being led astray, unusual in this day. The scene before me, above me and around me nothing short of magnificent, in fact... Beautiful

Lots of sand between your toes and waves crashing make this a beautiful beach. We strolled along the beach in the evening after dinner and had the whole stretch to ourselves. Very beautiful view looking out at the small islands and the coast.

Pauanui gets a great deal of hype from our circle of Aucklander friends, but honestly it’s not worth the drive. Once you get there you wonder where everything is, have we missed something? If you own a Bach then good on you, but for visitors it’s one of the most blah places you could find. No decent cafe’s, restaurants or places to visit. Essentially only one over priced resort miles from the beach (Puka Park), and everything in ‘town’ closes at 6pm or shortly thereafter. Tried to eat in one place that was about 30% full and was told the “kitchen is overwhelmed and so we are not accepting any more customers”, tried the only other local cafe/bar to be served over cooked calamari by obviously bored young waiters. That’s when we learned that dinner was going to need to be from the Supermarket and we had 10 minutes to get there before it closed! Our Second visit to Pauanui in 20 years and NOTHING has changed or improved since last time (2001). Clearly having an overpriced beach house at an overpriced ‘must be seen at’ beach town is not our thing. There are much nicer, better, more relaxed and more convivial beach towns up and down the fabulous Coromandel coast for the non-bachowning visitor.

Beautiful, clean beach with good summit walks, clean toilets and a section for camper-vans.
Definitely recommend a walk up the summit and around the beach and then a swim in the fresh, clean water to cool off.
The views are breathtaking too. Take a camera ☺️

A sand beach with a lot of space. Parking was easy despite a busy afternoon. It was to have van selling cold drinks. Thankful there are public toilets available on site.

Go, leave your phone in your lodge and enjoy the serenity. It's too nice to be disturbed by technology

We have visited Pauanui (pa-wa-noo-ee) is suitable for all age groups. Our 92 year old mother is with us this visit. Located on the Coromandel Peninsula it is a truly beautiful place to visit. There is an ocean beach (not usually large waves) for the more adventurous and an estuary for those wanting calmer waters.
You could do it on a day trip from Auckland but I would suggest you plan on staying longer. Accommodation ranges from typical "kiwi" baches to spectacular ocean-front properties, depending on your budget. There are apartments for rent, as well as house that can be rented through local real estate agents. There are also places listed on BookABach and probably AirBnB.
There is a small shopping centre that has a bakery, takeaway food, liquor store, ladies dress shop, great shop that sells everything from unique and unusual gifts to crockery, cutlery, electrical appliances, pots and pans etc etc. There is also a small "supermarket".
Pauanui hosts three golf courses. There is even an airstrip if you want to rent a plane and fly yourself down.
The town next door is called Tairua and can be reached by road or by ferry.

Unfortunately it was very windy, but then we have no control over that. Good to see the surf patrol on and a very clean beach which is well looked after.
