When I asked for a map of the gardens the man just said no. I could take a photo. I asked if the bird enclosures had descriptions of the birds. In a very patronizing manner, he said, "We are primarily a garden."
So why isn't it named Katikati Gardens and Birds.
As it was damp, we had to walk down a slippery grassy slope to get to the path. I have mobility issues so this was a concern for me.
There were no labels for the large beautiful trees. The gardens were scrappy, unkempt and in many places being overrun by noxious creepers eg. Morning Glory. The paths were not clear of overgrowth. The bird enclosures looked dirty and in need of some TLC..
We left feeling underwhelmed, disappointed and under valued. We will not be recommending it to visitors.

It appears somewhat neglected with murky ponds and lacking in garden maintenance, but worst is the rather sad birds with tatty cages with no greenery or entertainment!
Great idea .. donate the garden into a trust and get people who care for birds to volunteer !

This is a wonderful place and worth a visit. Beautiful and well kept gardens, amazing bird life including peacocks, white doves, and pheasants roaming. Good small cafe run with a few simple but yummy hot food and coffee options. Always super friendly. Open weekends and school holidays. One of my favourite places.

What an awesome place! Went here just to fill in some time whilst in the area and was so impressed with this place. The bird life here is amazing. The doves like to land on you to feed. So many varieties of birds all in beautiful surroundings. Peacocks and little chicks everywhere. Has a cafe too!

I had wanted to go to the bird gardens for years. A friend took me and I left feeling let down and unhappy about the caged birds. The restaurant food is unimaginative and the look of it unappealing. The gardens look neglected and seeing the beautiful birds in bare cages totally put me off. Not a single bit of greenery in the cages. Birds live and breed in trees. It's their habitat so for them to exist with no greenery must be extremely sad for them as it was for me. Quite honestly aside from many chickens and ducks and the few caged birds there isnt much to see to justify the entrance fee.

Last time we were here was 1984 and sadly it hasn't improved, in fact got worse. Less birds. Bigger area but untidy and unloved. Aviaries are old and dirty. The birds are in the dark. No signage anywhere. Not worth the $11 ea entrance fee.

We took our teenage international student here. Was shaded with mature trees. We were glad we visited and can see how it is a hit with the young ones. Some of the birds will eat the bird food out of your hands. Exciting for those whom have never done this before. Would be good if more information of the birds in the averies were on the cages so you could identify the birds. Also to be able to identify those birds walking around. Its a very natural environment. Recommend for all ages but especially those with under 13s.

It was ok, some pretty parts of the garden and lots of ducks and chooks. Pretty steep price though for what it is.

It's a pleasant way to spend 1-2 hours wandering around a bird garden but the garden was tired, needing a good spruce up and the birds are mostly poultry and fowl hoping visitors will feed them. The slightly more exotic birds (cockatiels, lorikeets, ringnecks etc) are in dilapidated aviaries. The ponds are stagnant. Old ornamental empty bird baths dotted all over the place. The owners could do with reinvesting some of the money they get from the entrance fee into upkeep instead of splurging on renovations to their adjoining house and updating their cars.

I cannot say enough about how wonderful this place is. I went back twice over the weekend as I enjoyed it so much. There are so many birds I have never seen before and they are very friendly. Make sure you get plenty of bird food at the entrance because you run out quickly!
