About
Moutohorā is one of News Zealand’s little-known treasures and home to a number of New Zealand’s rare and endangered plants, birds and reptiles. Located 9 kms off Whakatāne, the island is under the protection of the Department of Conservation (DOC) with access highly restricted. Departing from Whakatāne Wharf, the journey to Moutohorā is just a short 15-minute boat ride aboard our comfortable catamaran “The Moutohorā Cat”, designed to be able to nestle right onto the shore. Once ashore, the fully-guided tour allows visitors to learn about the island's unique flora and fauna, with is a chance to see a number of different species – including saddleback, red-crowned parakeet, little brown kiwi, tui – many of which are endangered or seldom seen on the New Zealand mainland. The tour includes a visit to Sulphur Bay where geothermal hot springs come up through the sand allowing for you to dig your own hot pool on the beach and ends with a circumnavigation of the island.

A great trip all round, very well worth it. Lots of seabirds on the boat ride to the island, as well as birds, tuatara and geckos on the island. Beautiful bush regenerating. Steep but easy walk to the saddle with great views of Whakaari Island. Finishing with a rest stop at the hot water beach. Friendly guides and crew. Thanks!

Our family group really enjoyed this day out.

We had a perfect hot summers day. The boat trip out was not too long and provided a good loop of the island where we saw seals and some interesting rock formations.

On land was an easy walk through some nice regenerative bush with abundant bird life and managed to see a Tuatara outside its burrow.

The walk finishes at a saddle with great views to Whakari. The walk takes the same route back. We finished up with a beautiful swim at the hot water beach.

The guides were really friendly and knowledgeable.

Thanks

This tour was amazing the tour guides knew so much and was able to tell us so much about the area and Moutohorā Island. The views at the saddle back were great. Getting to end and swimming and soaking in hot springs was amazing. Would very much recommend doing this tour.

Had a great trip out with Simon ( skipper) and Mac (guide). Trip was confirmed, we left on time and 15 minutes later we were enjoying watching seals frolicking. We landed and walked through the bush. We didn’t see a tuatara but we did watch tieke, piwakawaka and tūī. We then walked over to a beautiful beach where we swam (freezing cold) before sitting in a hot water pool Mac had dug for us. Just amazing. Two seals put on a display diving into the water like dolphins. Saw lots of kiwi footprints in the sand.

Easy, comfortable boat ride with Captain David doing his best to make sure we see any wildlife willing to make an appearance. Tanya and Mac were kind and knowledgeable guides once on the island. The whole experience was a family favorite! Just enough activity to feel adventurous but easy enough for the whole family. We didn’t know there’d be a chance to swim and picnic but Mac let us know when he noticed we didn’t have bags. We were able to adjust but I recommend wearing your bathing suit for a dip and packing a picnic lunch/snacks. I highly recommend this excursion for all!

Have grown up in Whakatane and never been to Moutohora. What an amazing experience with an awesome crew. From booking through to the day of trip amazing service. An enjoyable tour with interesting facts topped with lunch sorted for the 20 of us, and swim for those that wanted. Couldn’t ask for a better day out.

What a fantastic day out with these guys. So informative friendly and nothing too much trouble. Great walk on this island with lots of interesting facts and knowledge about the wildlife. Swim and hot pools on beach. We were so lucky to see a pod of Common dolphins on the way back who swam alongside the boat for ages enabling everyone to get get pictures of them. Highly recommend this brilliant trip.

What a great trip, fun boat trip out to the island.

Escorted tour around parts of the nature reserve including the summit of 'The Hump' with great views of White Island.

Very knowledgable guides who were able to locate and point out various birds, seals and other wildlife.

Lunch on the beach, where we swam in the sea and were able to experience the hot sand pools where you dig a hole (luckily for us a young lad dug one for us) and it fills with very hot water from the thermal lake below.

Totally recommend this trip.
