About Frontier Helicopters
Your White Island Volcano Adventure with KahuNZ takes you to the edge of and into a continuously active volcano, a living breathing geological giant where you will experience first hand the power of nature in its untouched form. Your view from high above spans the entire island. Towering steam columns, bold landforms and intricate textures make for an amazing spectacle. Drifting down and passing slowly along the crater rim you can sense the energy of each billowing crater and steaming vent. Close up, rich colours accentuate this rare environment of extreme beauty and raw energy. Landing provides the opportunity to take a one hour guided walk amongst the scene from the dawn of time.

Our travel agents set us up with Frontier Helicopters for a trip to White Island on Monday December 9th. We met the wonderful staff at Frontier and were introduced to our pilot and guide - Jason. We left for the island and arrived at the volcano about 11 am. We were given instructions about what to do in case of an emergency. After about an hour tour, we left the volcano behind just as two boats were dropping off people for their time on the island. Needless to say, we were the lucky ones as at 2:11 pm the volcano erupted instantaneously. Many injured, at least six dead and many still missing. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of those involved and their families. Us? We are feeling lucky. There but the grace of God, go us.

This tour was one of my all time favorites. The pictures don’t do it justice, you have to experience it for yourself. It was the most expensive part of our trip but totally worth it. The volcano activity was higher than usual when we went which was quite exciting and we learned a lot from our pilot/tour guide. He did seem a bit rushed and walked fast ahead of our group, which was just my wife and I and one other woman, but other than that is was amazing and we still had plenty of time to get photos along the way.

If you can afford it, I would definitely recommend the helicopter experience over the boat. Obviously, it is much faster, making for a more comfortable experience, and it is also much more personalised. When we arrived at their office, the staff were super friendly and the facilities (including washroom) were well-kept and clean. The actual tour was absolutely amazing. The helicopter flight was beautiful and before landing we flew around White Island and got epic views. Our pilot, Luke, was very professional and provided a great balance between providing facts about the island and giving us time to take photos and explore a bit. When we were booking, we were struggling to decide whether we should do the AM or PM option. We heard AM generally provides better conditions (cloud, wind), but since we were driving from Rotorua, we ultimately decided PM was more comfortable. We may have lucked out with the weather, but we had perfect conditions for our 12PM departure. We were also deciding between taking the helicopter from Rotorua and Whakatane. We chose the Whakatane option because it was cheaper, but the drive from Rotorua to Whakatane turned out to be a beautiful experience. The town of Whakatane is also a great place to spend some time before or after the excursion. While I cannot recommend this excursion enough, we did have a negative experience while booking. After booking the PM option on their website, we received an email from Jason putting us on an AM flight, due to the likelihood of better weather. We emailed back multiple times, over multiple days, to say that this wouldn't work from us and did not hear back. We ended up using the contact form on their website and heard back almost immediately. It seems like they may need to make sure all of their email inboxes are being monitored or forwarded appropriately. Regarding clothing, it can get quite windy on the island, so full length hiking pants and top are likely appropriate and hiking boots weren't overkill.

We did a day trip to White Island on September 21st, 2019 with SPECTACULAR conditions, I highly recommend this tour! Our pilot, Luke, was knowledgeable and full of information during the flight over to the island, and offered plenty of interesting tidbits as we hiked the area. A few things to note, to help you best plan your trip: 1) Go early! We took the first flight out, at 8am, and it was perfect...because we had the entire island to ourselves! The later you wait, the more you might encounter boatloads of tourists coming from the mainland. While it will never be 'crowded,' you might have a parade of 20-30 people touring the island at the same time you are...but if you're willing to go early morning, you will avoid the incoming boats that come later. 2) Be prepared to take photos and video as you approach the island; it's your only chance! When you depart, you go right back to the mainland with no other photo ops as good as when you approach. The pilot (Luke) was really good about giving us a 360 surround of the island, aerially, before we landed, and we got great pics and footage (which I will post here with this review). 3) The trip goes by very quickly, but if you're yearning for more time around the volcano you should consider a dive boat (if you scuba) for a return and a slightly different experience. I heard the diving is amazing and would love to come back and try it out...if I had more time, I would have done that. This is possibly the only place in the world to see an active cone volcano coming right out of the ocean, and to be able to walk on it! Frontier helicopters was professional, courteous, efficient, and clearly oriented towards giving us the best experience possible. They really went the extra mile and it was worth the cost.
