Great hot pools
Mar 2021
The accommodation is adequate but showing its age. However, the hot pools are bright and clean. The park-like grounds would make it a great family destination. Very enjoyable soaking on a cool autumn evening.

We had just been on the rail trail we were told about the hot pool. Nice to go and relax in the hot water. Good for the body

Friendly & loved the pools
Jan 2021
No frills campsite with beautiful pool @38oC - mmmmmm! Super friendly staff, helped me in an emergency with a smile. Kids loved the playground too & large area set aside for games.
Kitchen could have been a bit cleaner - needed a deep clean, but was fine & loads of space / sinks / hobs / toasters etc

Yearly Whanau Holiday
Jan 2021 • Family
We are back once again at Awakeri Hot Springs for our usual January Summer Holiday! We are staying in a Tourist Flat as there are 5 adults. The flat consists of 3 divan single beds in the dining/lounge area + a seperate bedroom with a single divan bed & double bed. There is a shower & toilet off the bedroom. A shop on site for those bits & pieces you require. Free access to the pool area if you stay on site. Only 10 minutes away from Whakatane. Fantastic friendly host & service. Highly recommend if you want to get away with the family! 🙂👍

Authentic local pools
Sep 2020
Great local hot pools that are open late. Mostly local people and very authentic. Just one large pool and one for the kids - but quite large and very warm.

Such good value for money and an excellent soak!
Jun 2020
I actually come here regularly as it is such a good experience. At night it is so peaceful as it is surrounded by bush and often we hear ruru. At $9 per adult it is great value for money for a hot mineral pool soak. I love the way it is quite rustic, for example the pool slopes on one side as the result of ground movement in a past earthquake. It isn't flash however the water is always clean as are the changing rooms and the grounds. There is also a smaller pool for families with younger children and there are sun shades over both pools. Definitely recommend visiting!

Nice for a soak but not very nice to stay. Very expensive for a site considering the facilities that are available. Sites are boggy, facilities are run down and place feels dirty.

Okay for a soak
Jul 2020 • Family
Good for a soak if you are in the area. A little run down but good heat in the main pool. The toilets are not the cleanest but manageable.

Thermal pool lovely
Jun 2020 • Couples
Good value at $9. We sat and soaked up the warmth of the large communal thermal pool. There are private pools also available for hire at the same cost which exclude you using the main communal pool.

We spent 1 night here over the Queens birthday long weekend, it’s cheap and wasn’t too busy but that’s about where the good points end. The campsite itself could be really nice but the facilities are so poor that we only stayed 1 night. The kitchen facilities are completely outdated and I’m doing a direct comparison with other campsites in NZ that I’ve stayed at.

The shower/toilet block on the far side is horrendous as shown in the photos. The hot water for the shower is from a natural source so reeks of sulphur, nice for a soak but not so nice for a shower. It’s the same deal for the kitchen hot water supply so you’re wasting up in very sulphurous water. The showers are only 1 step away from being totally outdoor showers. There is a small laundry area that was being used by locals who left behind rubbish. The hand basins beside the toilets are disgusting, covered in what appeared to be rat/mouse droppings, no hand soap or hand dryer.

We didn’t use the hot pools as they were completely rammed despite the current level 2 restrictions. I will also note that the park was hosting a Mongrel Mob birthday party that afternoon alongside another large birthday party. I personally have no issues with the gang party but some people would find it extremely intimidating.

Overall, the campsite is overdue an upgrade by at least 10 years if not more. There are numerous other reviews that have said the same thing. I can go along with the old school kiwi charm but it needs to be clean. I don’t take any pleasure in giving a bad review but I feel it only fair to warn any future customers.
