Big thanks to Phil, Stef, and the girls at Diveworks Charters for the amazing trip to Whale Island! An incredible experience on this island sanctuary with not only local stories and legends, but made personal by showcasing this family's own efforts at creating and maintaining a predator-free island for the many native birds and wildlife! Walking under the beautiful Pohutakawa trees with the sound of tui and saddleback is just good for your soul!

We choose the half day inshore fishing, four hours, about 5 km from the sea shore. The captain was very kind and helpful. However we spent almost one hour to find the fish. Every one of us got his or her fish, some of it was too big to catch it. It's really interesting and enjoyable, and the price is reasonable. Whakatane is a good place for fishing. If you have time, the White Island is a better place for visiting and fishing.

A good charter fishing boat with basic amenities, tackle and bait was supplied as part of our trip. The crew were most helpful and the captain did his best to find us fish. I caught my first Yellowtail Kingfish. At the end of the day all the fish was prepared for us and we were able to take it to the nearby Fish shop where they prepared it with chips, the freshest fisn n chips Ive ever had. I am looking forward to more trips.
