This track is down a long, dusty, and potholed road. It's fine to take your car down there, and don't be worried when you reach this part of the road. The loop itself is pretty, although the canyon was very obscured by bush; i expected to see much more of it than i did see! The forest itself is very pretty, with huge trees, although the waterfalls themselves are not extremely beautiful. One is more like a stream. Google maps says that it's about an hour 15 minutes, but leave at least an hour 30 minutes for the journey from Rotorua, due to the poor condition of the road. Track takes about 3 hours to walk.

We picked this trek since it had a decent length and seemed to offer a couple of natural highlights on the way. Getting there: If you search for "Whirinaki Forest Car Park" Google maps can take you there. The last couple of kilometers, there are also signs for the car park, pretty much from where the paved street turns into a dirt road. The dirt road is in good condition, so driving without a SUV is not an issue. You don't have any phone coverage in the park, at least we didn't with Vodafone and on the last 30 kilometers from Murupara there are no shops, restaurants, petrol stations etc. - keep that in mind. The hike itself: The hike is relatively even with few elevations and is in good condition. Therefore you can hike it with a low level of fitness. While there were a couple of cars parked in the car park, we didn't meet anybody during the actual hike. Unfortunately there are few highlights. The forest itself definitely has its charm, but after a couple of kilometers one would appreciate a change whether it be an observation point, a lake or whatever. The two supposed highlights are the waterfall and the valley. The thing is that you can only see the waterfall from the bridge above - which is an unfortunate angle - and the valley was so extremely overgrown, that we would have missed it, if it wasn't for the sign. There is a small sitting area as well as a toilet by the waterfall, in case that is relevant for you. The signage generally is mediocre. Sometimes it says "Waterfall loop" on the signs, then it switches to "Car park" and then suddenly we could only infer where to go by the fact that we remembered that there is also a mountain bike trek starting at the car park, so we followed that sign. Don't get me wrong, it is hard to get lost here, one can always tell where to go by the distances indicated on the signs and you pretty much only follow the main path anyway, but a bit more consistency would be appreciated. My conclusion: If you are in it for a tranquil hike with little elevation and few other hikers through a forest packed with fern trees and large native trees, but don't mind the fact that there is little variation, this might be the right option for you. In case you search for versatility and also a bit of a physical challenge during your hike, I'd say go somewhere else.
