Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Steep narrow road, but be brave and try it, worth the views from the top and photo opportunity. Handy to town, I drove from the top end coming down to the views. Not many parking spots though.

This is a good place to get a good view over Whakatane. You can get there easily on foot via the steps from Canning Street and following the footpath on Hillcrest Road.

Visited on Wednesday 7th September 2016. We were passing through Whakatane and spotted this lookout on a map. To get there is a very steep climb up stone steps. Well worth the effort for the views below and out over the ocean. If you want you can drive up there and there is a small carpark then a short flight of steps to the top. Road is not suitable for large campervans.

Well worth the trip up to the lookout. You gain a much better appreciation of the overall area with both inland and water views. Access is by 2 ways...you can drive to the lookout (very small parking area) however you still need to climb about 24 steps....no shade at top of lookout and surface although grassed is a little uneven.
The alternate access is 109 steps up to the small parking area from the Town Centre main street. The Visitor info lady said 64 steps...god love her, I don't think she can count. Any way despite being an unhealthy 67 year old and my partner with 2 very dickie knees, we did it...well worth it. You can see White Island still clouded in smoke...a reminder of the tragic loss of life last year.

Wrong name in TA, it should be PUKETAPU, not PuketapA. Anyway this lookout on top of the rock hill gives a really picturesque view, a place to catch excellent photos of north side of the city centre toward Muriwai Head (or Whakatane Head) to the tributary of Whakatane River to the sea. Two ways to reach this place, an easier way by car to the limited parking spaces at the start of 5-10 minutes climbing track to this place, or a bit exercise way by walking start from the city centre behind the huge rock, Puhaturoa Rock, and then step uphill through Whakatane Vertigraph, a 43 horizontal panels on vertical glazed tiles steps, named Te Mana o Papa, a 5-10 minutes walk to the starting point adjacent to the parking spaces. Just remember, because this Lookout is positioned facing to the north, its best photos captured toward Muriwai Head is when the sun is set, at the late afternoon. The reward is beautiful picturesque views on amazing horizon.

The steps up a rather steep but it doesn't take long to reach the top, and part of the way is sheltered. Along the way up there is a bench which is a good spot to sit and relax. Above us was a nest with three young birds. From the top you get a good view of the town and out into the harbour.

Stunning views overlooking Whakatane and out to see with White Island clearly visible. A place where you can feel at one with yourself and find peace. Go up early in the morning and enjoy a cooked breakfast at nearby Robert Harris. They do a mean breakfast!

A great lookout point ,where we always take people who visit us in Whakatane.
It is easily accessed by car from town, [no campervans though ], and there is roadside parking for a few cars. If you are fit enough for the climb up the path and steps, this is a "must see ' view point.
