Make sure the opening hours on the website reflect reality. The website said the museum opened at 10:00 am on Saturday but in reality it's closed all weekend!

I was wanting to find some further details on grandparents and where they lived. The two ladies in the museum were extremely helpful, went to all lengths to gather information for me. Found some information, but need another day or two at least to source more.

Good exhibition center with Maori and European settler artifacts as well as local arts and crafts. There is historical and geological (earthquake and volcano) information also.
It’s well displayed and has informative descriptions.
It’s free (donations accepted).

May be what some call small but this Museum and Arts was tops on displays, variety information, the Art Exhibition and was full of exhibits that were fascinating and interesting. The use of a wheel chair was a bonus for someone with a disability.

The Whakatane Museum is no where near as good as the old museum in Whakatane. The new museum which is attached to the Library, doesn’t even contain half of the exhibits the old one and is really small . On the plus size the Art Gallery is a great addition and contains some very intriguing pieces of work.

it has a small local content in the museum,
and ever changing art in the galleries
mostly local artists , but sometime has unusual stuff like monks making sand mandalas

Fascinating exploring the displays that expose the diverse history and culture from this region. Art and craft displays are ever changing in the galleries alongside. This modern building is well appointed and in the heart of Whakatane with the library alongside. Something to be proud of and show off!

My visit around the museum was very enjoyable. Lots of local history and well presented. Museum staff were helpful.
You can take your time and learn about the Whakatane region.

What a great museum. Lots of reading to do and a great exhibition with a lot of history recorded and artifacts as well. Certainly worth stopping by to visit.

We called in to see what was there and were pleased we did. The exhibitions inside were great. We were met by native bird song and enjoyed the excellent displays and paintings.
