Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

There is no doubt this is a gem of a NZ beach. While I love the sea, I never swim in unlifeguarded water especially with our children so we were happy to find the lifeguard area and even though it was a cool windy week day (during school holidays) there was an on duty lifeguard (thank you!) So we braved the water, it was quite warm but the cold wind got the better of us in the end. One difficulty we found was no changing rooms and as we had visited just for the afternoon, the 13 year old refused to get changed in a smelly toilet with no hook to hang bag. I ended up dressing very inelegantly in the car. A bench or a few hooks on the toilet wall is an easy fix and wouldn't go amiss. Our local west coast beaches get a bad rap at times but you can't fault them for clean well cared for change rooms and toilet blocks - for a well known tourist spot the lack of a changing room was surprising.

What a stunning beach with amazing shells and friendly locals! We stayed at the Freedom Camp at the West End of Ohope Beach and thoroughly enjoyed it. Everything was clean and tidy and peaceful. We have travelled around New Zealand several times and Ohope Beach is one of the nicest beaches we have been to! Thank you for keeing this place special.

Ohope Beach is truly a beach where there is space for everyone. We love going to Ohope Beach for family picnics. It is really a safe beach for little children because it is flat & no huge waves crashing onto the beach. You have to be still close to the children for safety precautions. A fantastic beach.

A nice Long Beach with not too many people on it which is s bonus , I wouldn’t like the feel of suburbia or crowds on the one way in during summer time , in fact I would avoid it st that time , plenty of sand for kids to play on and Snail Island was quite intriguing , White Island had steam pouring out of it and was sobering to see after the tragic events this year . Looking out there made you realise how far those poor people had to be dashed to shore , I particularly like Whakatane township . Enough to consider retiring there but not so Ohope ,

Drove along beachfront and down to harbour. The progress with housing is huge since I was last here. Silver Surf diary is still there and going strong, the cafe culture has arrived also. getting towards dark so a beach walk will wait for the next visit

Just minutes from Whakatane, Ohope Beach has a dream-like quality. To have a beach this quiet on a sunny Sunday afternoon in early March is unbelievable. We walked for quite awhile seeing only a couple of people, and getting our feet wet in the still warm water. I’d love to spend a whole day here!

Stunning large beach that stretches as far as the eye can see. Can see what it’s been voted NZs favourite! We enjoyed some great family walks looking for driftwood, shells and interesting seaweed. Small waves are good for boogie boarding. A bit chilly for swimming this time around but we’ll be back to try that out another time.

Ohope is known for its white sand and it didn't disappoint walking on the beach, breathing fresh air and taking plenty of pictures of Whale Island and White Island. There's nice wee cafes and a neat art and clothes gallery too, with a very friendly owner. Beautiful look out points to drive or hike or cycle too, from two different spots.

Its a unplanned visit and the beach is above average quality. Can swim, less rocks, big shore. Can play games on the shore. Place to relax and there is accommodation. Walkable distance from the City main roads. Worth for 1 night stay.

Great wide and extensive beach, room for everyone!!! Clean and tidy. We enjoyed the body surfing and also used our boogie boards. The water is warm once you get in! Several toilet and facilities to rinse off the sand.
