Stunning large beach that stretches as far as the eye can see. Can see what it’s been voted NZs favourite! We enjoyed some great family walks looking for driftwood, shells and interesting seaweed. Small waves are good for boogie boarding. A bit chilly for swimming this time around but we’ll be back to try that out another time.

safe swimming beach...a few kilometres of it ....probably better than some of the other beaches in the bop....plenty of space and sand for everyone...a pleasant walk with easy access....lovely playground nearby for children....and a good coffee at pleasant cafes along the road

There is no doubt this is a gem of a NZ beach. While I love the sea, I never swim in unlifeguarded water especially with our children so we were happy to find the lifeguard area and even though it was a cool windy week day (during school holidays) there was an on duty lifeguard (thank you!) So we braved the water, it was quite warm but the cold wind got the better of us in the end. One difficulty we found was no changing rooms and as we had visited just for the afternoon, the 13 year old refused to get changed in a smelly toilet with no hook to hang bag. I ended up dressing very inelegantly in the car. A bench or a few hooks on the toilet wall is an easy fix and wouldn't go amiss. Our local west coast beaches get a bad rap at times but you can't fault them for clean well cared for change rooms and toilet blocks - for a well known tourist spot the lack of a changing room was surprising.

What a fantastic beach - nice soft sand with plenty of room so you don't feel crowded. Loved swimming and mucking around in the waves. Saw plenty of surfers at the westend. Would love to have this beach on my doorstep.
