We went up the Pinnacles from the Kauaeranga Road carpark up the Webb Creek Trail. We stayed the night at the Pinnacles hut and then walked back to the carpark through the Billygoat Trail. The trail near the top had amazing views of the forest area around the pinnacles. It was quite scenic all around the area. There were also plenty of other camping and tramping options around the area.
The trails all crisis cross with each other so looking at the right trail for your experience isn't too difficult.

The Kauaeranga Kauri Trail Is an excellent hike in the Coromandel Forest Park. You can do a ‘there and back’ as a day walk or make it an overnighter and stay at the Pinnacles hut (DOC - booking required).

We did it as a 2-day hike. We tramped up to the Pinnacles Hut (sign says three hours but we did it in two), checked in, had a cup of tea, left our packs and then hiked up to the Pinnacles summit (just under an hour).

The track from the Kauaeranga Valley road end car park to the hut is well-formed but it gets very steep. You need a good level of fitness and decent footwear. We saw families with relatively young children who were coping well. The track from the hut to the Pinnacles summit is extremely steep and has rungs mounted into the rock to help. Probably not so good for young children. The view from the top is superb from the ocean to the east to the Hauraki plains to the west.

The Pinnacles hut is well set up. It’s manned by a ranger who checks you in and sets out the basic rules. It sleeps about 80 in different dorms. There’s a large communal kitchen with gas cookers and plenty of tables for eating. The toilets are basic but clean. There is a cold shower to wash off the grime of the day.

The Kauaeranga Valley road end car park is about 20km from Thames. At least half of the road is unsealed but it’s fine to drive in a standard car.

Great weekend away. Easy drive from Auckland.

It is beautiful scenery all round in Coromandel but many of the roads are unmetalled and you can drive for long periods with lots of dust and stones. Also the roads can be narrow and involve quite a lot of sharp turns. It's fine you're prepared for it. Give yourself plenty of time and just accept that it you are driving you need to concentrate fully so catching snatches of scenery will be the best you can manage at times.Make sure your tyres are in good shape too! Always check with the NZ roads website to make sure everything is open.

We think we are quite fit and travelled to the Coromandel just to walk up to the Pinnacles and back in the day.
It is quite possible to walk up and back in under 6 hours but it is hard work.
Sadly the day we walked in rained all the way up and most of the way down but the walk is lovely and even with the rain we did get to see some good views across the Coromandel.
Make sure you take food and enough water for the whole trip and do not underestimate the size of the steps up and down and you need to scramble and climb the last bit so need a head for heights.

We have visited Coromandel Forest Park numerous times as well as other places in the Coromandel Peninsula, it is a truly unique area with incredible scenery. The reason we love visiting the area is because of it being so remote and mainly untouched in parts and is really appealing, in just a few hours it is possible to totally get away from it all. It is worth the journey deep into the peninsula as it is a very rewarding experience.

No great tourist highlights here, just a vast forest with tracks and paths. Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of a temperate rain forest and help conservation too.

Out of the way place, very remote, beautiful scenery, mixture of sealed and unsealed roads, take advantage of lookout points.
