LA BELLA DESCONOCIDA

This Cathedral is one of the best CAtholic Temples in Spain, maybe outside is basic, but the interior is amazing, carvings and decoration are superlatives. It includes a Visigotic Temple of VII Century

Thank you for both visit and review. We usually thing that the differences between the simple outside and the beautiful interior make the cathedral so surprising, despite other things such as the crypt, that you mentioned. Thanks a lot! Greetings!

Visit to the work in process in the cathedral.
Sep 2019
The visit let's you see what is unseen from the church. You walk 4 meters aways from the altarpiece. This is an incredible masterpiece where 4 different important Spanish specialist workshops of the time worked in the XVI century. Just amazing! Just incredible experience!

Thank you for both visit and review. Indeed, the special visit "Descubre las obras" gives an amazing point of view of the cathedral, as well as the main altarpiece is like never seen before. Something unique that deserves a trip to Palencia. Greetings!

Restoration in Progress
Oct 2018 • Solo
It's 5€ entry with English audio tour device for marked stops. Note that the audio stops do not correspond with brochure map, but the map is useful to identify specific chapels by name/number to associate with the narration. Several areas (about 1/3 of cathedral) were closed for restoration through 2020 which was frustrating since you cannot view some chapels and there was a lot of construction noise inside when I visited. The 7th century San Antolin Crypt with Roman columns and arches is not to be missed and the Trascoro above it is impressive. The exterior stonework and sculptures outside the cathedral are as good as the carvings and religious images contained within the many interior chapels. There is a guided tour in Spanish at 12:30pm.

We are sorry that visitors cannot see the full monument, but the works were so urgent and necessary. Next year will be the perfect moment to know the cathedral at its best, and for 2021 we will be celebrating the 800 years of construction. It will be a pleasure to receive you again with much better views and acts for the event. Thank you so much for your visit and review

The unknown cathedral ,extremely beautiful
May 2018 • Friends
I was on a short trip to Palencia ,a small historic town where I was surprised to discover a striking cathedral in Plaza de la Inmaculada .I visited the most important cathedrals of Spain in the past ,but I had no idea about the Unknown Beauty .I learnt that the ''old lady''is declared Historical -Artistic Monument .It was a great pleasure to travel back in the 14 th century .From the outside it seemed to me simple and austere ,but once inside I realised its beauty ,admiring the wonderful high altar with the story of Christ in dozens of panels ,as well as other religious elements .I particularly enjoyed the wonderful big flamand tapestries ,they are really spectacular . Unfortunately I didn't have enough time for a serious study .

Ancient monument

Ancient construction very good keeped. You can see how the antique sociality used to build things as it is very well preserved.

'Vielen dank' for your review. Certainly in Palencia cathedral you can learn a little bit about medieval constructions because of its refined style. Auf Wiedersehen!

The Unknown Belle no more
May 2018 • Couples
This, the 3rd largest cathedral 8,in Spain, was ignored by many for centuries hence called the Ünknown Belle¨Indeed it is and now being restored and with good press is called the Known Belle. A visit is an exposure to just about every architectural trend one finds in Spanish monuments. From Romanesque to mostly Gothic and Renaissance. A real treasure. A visit takes hours and it is aided by a good portable audio system. It gives great detail and in this far away province you may just find few people allowing for full enjoyment. That is if no group of elderly retirees show up with a vociferous guide. This happened to us at the end of the tour which finished in the VII century Visigoth Crypt built over a Roman ruins and latter modified in the early middle ages. Fantastic. The nuisance resolved with patience because these groups wonder quickly and had the whole crypt for ourselves soon. The cloister is also included in the tour as is the museum which has a great El Greco rendition of Saint Sebastian and is the only place we have found you can stick your nose into it 10 inches from the safety glass protected painting and can remain in the room for a long time admiring eye level what is, arguably the best treasure of the cathedral.

Thank you for your truly fair review. We are glad to read that, not only nationals but foreigners too, recognise the value of this great cathedral in our little (but proud) city. On the other hand, we are sorry to read about your nuisance, because as long as we remain so 'unknown' there is usually so much peace inside the temple. Thank so much for your visit ('from really far away') and for taking a few extra minutes for writting this review

An Incredibly Beautiful and Interesting Cathedral- Good Audio Tour- Helpful Personnel
Apr 2018 • Couples
This Cathedral turned out to be a highlight in our recent Northern Spain Trip. We have visited and enjoyed many other Cathedrals and Churches in the country, and Palencia's is just at the same level of beauty and interest of all others . We also found that unlike some, the available audio tour is quite good.

On the morning of our visit, there was some preservation work being done and we could not visit the Girola area and Chapels. However, we learned a lot about all other chapels and altars.

We also had an interesting interaction con with the personnel. It happened that along our path through the cathedral, we found the Crypt closed, since other areas were also cordoned off , we assumed the crypt could not be visited that day. We left after a couple of hours, and walked around the old area of Palencia for a while locating a place to eat. While doing this, the man at the ticket office of the cathedral found us , recognized us, and informed us that for some reason even though the crypt had been closed that morning, it would be open later in the afternoon.

Well, we headed back to the cathedral after our lunch, and the same man welcomed us back, and we spent some time learning the history of the crypt and some other areas. This encounter in a way, enhanced our pleasure visiting the cathedral.

We were sorry, that there was no video documentary that we could buy, take with us, and enjoy at home. This could be a wonderful addition to the joy of visiting Palencia.

Thank you so much for your kind review, it´s a pity that you found some areas closed that day but we are happy to hear about your encounter and the final resolution to visit the crypt. We are also very glad to read that our cathedral has delighted you, it is a honor! Again we have to thank you for your visit and for such a good review. We hope to see you again in the future! Best regards!

Frustrating wait to get in, had to wait till 4pm Sunday. But worth the wait (we waited in Ajo de Sopas restaurant and had stunning tapas!) glorious cathedral and the El Greco in the museum as you come out is breathtaking.

One of the most beautiful cathedrals in Spain
Oct 2017 • Couples
The exterior does hardly prepare the visitor for the beauty inside, although some of the Gothic arches of the various entrance doors are quite remarkable. The best way to fully appreciate it, is to start with the Visigothic crypt on top of which the cathedral was built. The cathedral has on display a large number of beautiful religious works of art and valuable objects of cult. It is also adorned with elaborate stain glass window, shining in the light of the sun. A place you will certainly remember and not to be missed if you come to Palencia.
