We’ve seen a lot of churches and cathedrals this trip but this cathedral style was something we’d not seen before. The mosaic floor in particular was quite amazing. In our view it’s a must visit. Also, you must visit the Officina Mosaic shop in the...More

I guess you get used to skulls and bones in church architecture, but this place takes it to a wholly different level. Yes the floor mosaics are fabulous, and the ceiling ceramics should not be missed, but the martyrs shrine is deeply disturbing. The story...More

Entry is free. The interior is stunning. Look up: the ceiling is amazing! And don't forget to go down into the crypt. A great place to explore. Won't take you more than 1/2 hour or so.

This is a remarkable place, but when you are an art historian (I am) your heart breaks every time when you see people without respect for art and history running with high heels on the unique mosaics. In a few years the medieval mosaics will...More

Not only is it worth visiting to see the amazing display of the skeletons and skulls of the 800 plus martyrs behind the altar, there is a stunning mosaic floor which depicts the tree-of-life. Otranto's most outstanding feature in a surprising pocket of Italy's heel,...More

Christian martyrs beheaded by invading Turks - never heard anything about them having a chance to convert to Islam- that’s more like what Medieval Christians did.
