Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

In the basilica beautiful floor mosaic as well as nice ceilings. In the crypt many frescoes.
Be aware it closes for siesta, 12 pm - 3 pm.

Throughout our week Puglia tour we saw dozens of beautiful Churches, but this one counts in top 3.
It's set in the center of old town Otranto dating back to 11c.
A rather simple stone facade hides amazing Tree of Life mosaic spread over the entire Church floor.
Another Church highlight is the beautiful wood carved ceiling, as well the skulls and bones Chapel of the Martyrs.
After paying hefty entry fees in Lecce Churches, I was pleasantly surprised entry here is free.

Lovely mosaic floor, and creepy ossuary in the chapel. Free entry well worth a half an hour or longer in between ice cream and coffee & cake time.

We travelled a long way to see this building. Access was limited in the morning because of a wedding. The church then closed from 12-3 and when it reopened most was closed off for no apparent reason. All you could do was stand inside the west door - from where most of the floor cannot be seen because it is covered in pews and chairs. The only exposed floor is in the area in front of the altar, which you were not allowed anywhere near. Disappointing total disregard for people who want to come and experience this heritage.

This Cathedral contains an astounding medieval mosaic within a baroque church setting.
Loosely connected by a tree of life, the mosaic represents a multitude of religious and mythical themes from Adam and Eve to Noah's Ark and is populated by griffins, Amazons and centaurs among others.
Not to be missed.

Italy is a sea of beautiful churches that can sometimes meld together in one's memory, but this one stood out. The original Byzantine mosaic floor in the main sanctuary is still intact, and each of the dozens of pillars in the basement is made out of a different material. Definitely visit if you're at all a fan of beautiful old churches

The cathedral is full of unique surprises and these include the mosaic floor from the 11 th century, the beautiful crypt with iys wall paintings and the gruesome history behind the 800 skulls exhibited in a side chapel. These were innocent Christins murdered during the siege by the Turks in the 1480s.

This is a must-see whilst in Otranto. The famous mosaic floor is well worth spending some time looking at - it might not be the most impressive artistically, but its sheer scale and age still make it fascinating. The crypt has some lovely remains of medieval(?) frescoes. Beware out of season opening hours - it was shut 12 - 3 when we visited!

The church is located on a little square in the upper part of the historical center. The first what strikes is the floor from front to back covered in a sort of life tree mosaic. Next to the church is the bell tower or campanile in Italian.
