I went here on the recommendation of my italian professor....not knowing anything about it! It is absolutely superb and well worth going out of one's way to see. It is about 25kms south of Lecce

The Basilica Chiesi di S Caterina has spectacular Giotto influenced frescoes. 14/15 C but I think my favourite are around the cloister.

This is just fantastic. Interior of the church is covered in high quality 14 th century frescoes - sometimes described as the Assisi of the south- and justifiably.
