Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Although the thick vegetation, the insufficient number of signs and the destruction that this place suffered will create obstacles to your visit there, these ruins represent one of the most important Frankish Castles in Peloponnese. 10-11 Km away from Gytheio on the road connecting Gytheio-Areopolis you might see on the right a gas station and on the left a lonely farmhouse. You can park your car in the fields next to the farmhouse and start your 20min ascent up to the hill. Please keep in mind -and in absence of sings- just to reach the top of the hill. You might enter the castle from the fallen walls in southeastern area (the main gate is at the north side but it is difficult to be accessed from below). You can walk on the walls (for the most part) in order to avoid the thick vegetation, watch the beautiful view and see the remaining part of the 13th century main building, the main gate, as well as some cistern. Ottoman conquerors made some alterations too. The castle was built by the French Knight Jean de Neuilly and the name Passavas is just the Greek pronunciation of the French war-cry "Passe Avant" (move forward/charge!). Since that time the Castle has seen many plots, dramas and much blood. History Buffs if they search will find its history interesting. Due to the blood spilt there and the accidents that do happen sometimes very rarely (be careful because some people in the past lost their lives) has the reputation of "haunted". But these are just folklore stories. Local people have connected this castle with the Legend of the Princess that suicide by falling with her horse from the cliffs (you might find them impressive and scary) but this is also not accurate since the real story happened in another castle (Araklovo- Chateau de Bucelet) and the "princess" was probably the beautiful Maria, daughter of the legendary noble warlord Doxapatri. Overall Passavas is worthy to be visited although the remaining parts are not many.

This castle is high above the road between Diros and Gythio. We passed it thirty years ago but did not go up. I don't know if it now has tourist facilities, but if you are pushed for time I would say that there are better places to go.

After we had made it up the first climb, the trail leading up to the top disappeared. So we hiked through olive trees and bushes to the castle. In the end, the view was not worth the effort we had previously endured. Our legs were bloody and sore from the trees. There may be a path that we have not found.

this castle is off the beaten track, but well worth going out of your way to visit, fantastic view. And you will likely have the place to yourself.
