We did the steep track up and the longer, gentler way down, we think a total of something like 8 km. Definitely recommend that order, since the views as you descend the longer, gentler way are drop dead gorgeous and doing it from the top...More
You have a few options to take in the 360 degree views from mt john observatory. Pay $8 and drive up.....well why would you do that! Start at the hot springs and take the well signposted track up. It. A short, not so steep walk...More
We set off from the south end of Mt John from the car park. A pretty steep climb, but it saw us at the summit within 30 minutes. Wow such epic views. We then went and had breakfast at the lovely Astro Cafe ( with...More
It's a steep climb but totally worth it for the view at the top. Absolutely stunning scenery of the Lake and surrounding area. One of my most favourite view points I have seen so far. It's nice to stop off at the cafe at the...More
I did the 1-hour track from the car park to the top. It’s steep but the view is definitely worth it! I left it a bit late and the cafe was closed. Would recommend trying to get there before 3pm to enjoy a drink /...More
Took the shorter/steeper track to the summit and the longer/gentler track down. The surrounding peaks were still covered in snow because it was only spring, and with great sunny weather, the views were one of the best I had seen in New Zealand.
Park at the Tekapo Springs (Spar). We started through the forest, left to the spar.
It's about 1.7 km quite steep up the hill through a forest. Hardly any views at all. Then you already arrive at the summit. The views are in all directions...More
We did this hike on a sunny, but cold, day in April.
There is a somewhat steep ascent through forest and up to the observatory, but all on good path and no need for any navigation.
The views across the lake are absolutely breathtaking!
You can certainly drive up to the cafe ($8 NZ) it that itself is spectacular (not windy on the day we were there). From there you can see just about all of the circuit walk and make your own decision. I agree a stroller... More
You can certainly drive up to the cafe ($8 NZ) it that itself is spectacular (not windy on the day we were there). From there you can see just about all of the circuit walk and make your own decision. I agree a stroller won't work. You could even walk part of the circuit - say to the small summit and back. Some of our group were feeling lazy and stayed at the cafe and we waved to them from the summit. The energetic ones in our group walked up to Mt John from Lake Tekapo Springs - this would be tough with a baby unless you are very fit.
