Park at the Tekapo Springs (Spar). We started through the forest, left to the spar. It's about 1.7 km quite steep up the hill through a forest. Hardly any views at all. Then you already arrive at the summit. The views are in all directions...More

We did this hike on a sunny, but cold, day in April. There is a somewhat steep ascent through forest and up to the observatory, but all on good path and no need for any navigation. The views across the lake are absolutely breathtaking! We...More

Must be one of the best walks I have u der taken in a while. We took the lake track for the journey to the summit and came down through the tree track. Views are spectacular !

The "summit hike" up is about 45 minutes and moderately challenging. A young couple behind us with two toddlers had to turn back. The view from the top is rewarding and the circuit track around the lake (about another 90 minutes) has many nice views...More

Easy to find the steep zig-zag path up but we were disappointed at the lack of signs on the longer descent. We ended up rejoining the path we had come up on. At the bottom of the track the longer path is indicated but by...More

The hike up the hill (leaving from outside the hot pools in Lake Tekapo) is relatively short but challenging part of the trek due to the steep incline. The track is well maintained, although not many places to stop and take a break along the...More

Superb round walk, quite strenuous at times. Reminiscent of Cat Bells in the Lake District UK. Best way to do it is counter-clockwise, ie along the lake first as the more direct route to the Observatory is quite a pull up through the forest.

A fairly steep hike, need to be fit. We enjoyed a horse rider coming past on a steep section. Well marked and a good trail to follow. At the top the views are wonderful and well worth the effort.

This walk is quite strenuous in parts but worth it to get to the cafe at the top. The views from the top are stunning. You can go on further walks from the top although most people stay at the cafe. The cafe prices are...More

Some of us walked up from the Springs at Lake Tekapo (end of road on left) while the others drove up ($8 fee) to the Astro Cafe. The walk was a brisk 30-40 mins uphill (a lot of posts quote longer). Once at the top...More

You can certainly drive up to the cafe ($8 NZ) it that itself is spectacular (not windy on the day we were there). From there you can see just about all of the circuit walk and make your own decision. I agree a stroller... More
