Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Unfortunately, we couldn't do the whole circuit because of the strong wind. But a hike to the top of the hill is certainly a to-do if you're staying in or near Tekapo. An easy track that can be managed in trainers, with stunning 360° views of the whole lake area.

A short but exciting walk close to Lake Tekapo. The ascent was relatively steep but short-lived and the view was most definitely worth it!

Our travel group was 3 adults (all below 45 yrs) and 2 kids (12 and 8 yrs respectively). We started from near the hot pools area and made it to the summit (and cafe). Excellent hike and do-able for people in moderate fitness (our travel group are generally active but by no means super fit). We came across people on horses while hiking so believe there are such services if u want to see the sights. Bring sun protection (wide-brimmed hat with neck protection, long-sleeved tops etc) and be prepared for strong winds. Caps won't cut it in the sorching sun. We came back another day by car (drove into the Mount John carpark for the seniors in our group to enjoy the view from the summit).

This is a challenging walk/ hike, we went clockwise, the terrain is steep and a bit hairy! Definitely wear good tread shoes and pack water and warm gear. Check weather conditions and sunset time b4 you depart, The weather can be tricky. The path is at times slow and steady. Definitely not for small kids or if you are hungover. Views r amazing

I walked-hiked it clockwise because I like to get the steep parts done first.
Proper footwear. Trees, grasslands and then along-above the lake.
Not for families with small kids or those outa shape.

Great morning walk – came up via the Lake, down straight to Tekapo Springs. Great views and good exercise.

Be sure you go counterclockwise doing the lake side first. The elevation change is challenging either way. But the views are absolutely amazing. Also stop for a quick bite at the Astro Cafe. We had a sandwich and coffee and were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was.

It’s a good 15km walk if you start in the village. We took the clockwise route which involves a steep and steady 1hr climb up to the observatory at the summit where there’s also a small cafe. The return journey is a steady circular descent with some fantastic views and took us about 2 hrs.
I’d recommend hiking boots as there’s some rough ground particularly on the way up. Take some water with you because the cafe isn’t always open due to staffing issues.
Recommended.

A lovely track, do the long one (starting at the lake front near the hot pools) if you have a chance.

Awesome walk to do early in the morning with dogs, very steep in parts, would have to have good level of fitness.
