Earth & Sky Stargazing and Observatory tours operate in beautiful Lake Tekapo situated in the South Island. Visitors find enjoyment, entertainment and inspiration through a ‘hands-on’ experience as knowledgeable astronomy guides share the wonders of space, promote a scientific understanding of the southern night sky, and help reconnect people with a special part of nature using powerful telescopes. Tours operate at two big sky locations including the University of Canterbury Mt John Research Observatory. Lake Tekapo sits at the heart of the gold ranked ’Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve‘ (est 2012) - Earth & Sky - the best attraction in New Zealand to show you the universe.

We chose to visit the Cowans Observatory mainly because we know very little about astronomy and the Mt John Observatory visit is twice as long and twice as expensive and you get back very late. We were glad we made that choice. We had an...More

Got lucky with a near 100% clear sky. The stars were breathtaking. Our guides told us a lot about the planets and the stars and I learned a lot from them. I also got to see planets and stars from telescopes, ex. Saturn! I really...More

Breath taking views but I wish they had more on the menu besides cakes and slices, but the view certainly makes up for it. The staff were very friendly as well. A must on your visit to Lake Takepo.More

We did the cheaper tour at Cowen's observatory which is an outpost of St John's observatory. The down side of this is that if it is cloudy then you can't have the indoors presentation and teaching, it just gets cancelled. The good side is that...More

We did the night tour but I believe they also offer day tours. Night is probably best especially if the sky is clear.
