If you're interested in astronomy, booking a Mt John Observatory night tour is a fail-safe option, because you're guaranteed a great experience regardless of the weather. There was 100% cloud cover on the evening we went. Earth & Sky generously offered everybody to reschedule their tour or take an 80% refund, but I'm so glad we decided to go on... More

We were originally scheduled for a 10:00 night tour. Due to cloud cover issues that night we were allowed to reschedule. We decided to take the 8:00 Twilight Tour the next night which worked out great. Th Twilight Tour took a little over 2 hours. They give you an overview of the research being done at the observatory and the... More

I dont usually write bad reviews but this one was frustrating. To start with, there was no time mentioned on the booking confirmation email. So if you forget what time you booked in particular 2 months in advance you have to call and ask them to look up the booking. Worse, they do not EVER pick up in the first... More

We were lucky to have a lovely clear evening, despite having had cloudy skies all day. The view of the stars and planets in a place with no light pollution was breathtaking. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and delivered information on the Southern sky in a fun and interesting way. The tour is just the right length of time at... More

Two excellent guides, thank you Julian and Zoey for a wonderful evening. The time of our visit coincided with a bright moon but we still saw more stars than ever before. Seeing the milky way is incredible and I personally enjoyed looking at the moon through a powerful telescope - thank you Rob for pointing out the Sea of Tranquility.... More

Let me clarify that I didn't go for the tour as I had to cancel it due to my brother falling ill (my tour will be on the 19th of March at midnight). I called them up earlier today and explained the situation and they gave me a full refund, no questions asked. I am very happy as they were... More

Booked into the Cowans Observatory tour and we weren't disapointed. Learnt heaps regarding the night sky and got to see some interesting sights.

The biggest tourist trap I have encountered in the South island.  For close to a hundred dollars per person you get a five minute bus ride to a makeshift observatory (Cowan's observatory) where you are led by guides who have minimal and superficial knowledge of astronomy.  One guide told us that the distance between the sun and Uranus was 200,000km... Kia ora, Thank you for your feedback – it is greatly appreciated as we use it to work towards improving our customer experience. The earth and sky tour is the only way to get to see the stars from the top of Mt John at night but it is so worth it. They supply you with a warm coat and red light and take you up in their bus. We were a group of 14 with 2 guides and a research astronomer who... More
