    Worth a stop
We made a quick stop in Trim after visiting Bru na Boinne on our way to Belfast. The town was cute ( plus easy to find parking) and the castle and surrounding walls/gates were in better shape than we expected. It was definitely worth a visit, even if you are not Braveheart fans.

Get the guided tour for this great castle
We paid for the guided tour (entry to the castle is free) and really enjoyed the information as well as the ability to go into the castle right up to the top. The views from the top are great! Trim Castle is in really great condition considering how old it is. Really enjoyed our visit.

    Bravehart
Trim Castle, located in County Meath, Ireland, is Ireland’s largest and best-preserved Anglo-Norman castle. It was constructed over a 30-year period starting in 1172 by Hugh de Lacy. Trim Castle was strategically built to guard the inland passage from Dublin to the northwest. Also….Trim Castle served as a prominent filming location for the 1995 film “Braveheart,” directed by and starring Mel Gibson.

    Surprised
Completely surprised by the experience of visiting trim castle, the size, how well it has been kept, and most importantly the way it was brought back to life by our OPW guide Valerie. Thank you for a glimpse into the history of the castle and the politics and people. So glad I visited.

    Autism Friendly
I would highly recommend the guided tour of Trim Castle, it was very interesting, our tour guide was great at explaining the history of the castle. As was the lady at the ticket office,we explained that out adult son has autism, she informed the young lady that was our guide and both were very understanding, we got through the full tour without any problems, made it to the top even though he is very nervous of heights. Great accomplishment for our son, many thanks for all your help and an enjoyable experience, also had a picnic and a walk in the surrounding grounds.

    Outstanding guided castle experience
Our afternoon tour of Trim Castle today was exceptional, due to the setting and fantastic communication skills of our guide, Brenda. Her detailed knowledge of Irish history, alongside her ability to include all of the visitors, including children, in her presentation was outstanding. The castle and the surrounding historical area is amazing to walk around and very well maintained. It was fascinating to look at the different models of the castle inside the keep depicting its construction throughout the years. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and highly recommend.

Good place to learn history of Trim
Although a relatively small town, Trim has the castle to offer its visitors. The Trim castle is worth seeing and experiencing. Also a good place to learn about the history of that part of Ireland.

    Well preserved historic site
The keep dominates the centre of Trim village. It is the largest best-preserved Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. We did not visit the inside of the keep, access is by timed guided tour that would have involved a wait but the external area which is free to visit contains helpful information panels illustrating the castle’s history and is worth a visit.

    Great place and great tour
Trim is such a wonderful castle. It sparked off my history as a young child even in it's dilapidated state. On my most recent visit in July I was very impressed at the OPW's renovations. Keep up the great work Our tour guide Brenda was wonderful and gave us great insight into the castle's history. And thanks Brenda for the information you gave me after the tour on the local history

Trim castle is a must see! Recommend taking the guided tour, guide was absolutely brilliant!
Trim castle is a must see! Recommend taking the guided tour, guide was absolutely brilliant! Building and grounds are well kept and staff friendly. Tour guide was excellent, highly personable and knowledgeable and we definitely recommend the guided tour if able. The Keep does have some tight spaces and recommend verifying with staff prior to tour if you have mobility issues, etc. Views are excellent and learned a great deal during tour. Some scenes of the epic movie Braveheart were filmed here, but Mel Gibson was not available for today’s tour 😂 Also recommend local tourist office next to the castle (separate building), again wonderful knowledgeable people.

Trim Castle is open only on the weekends in January. Fortunately we arrived on Saturday and managed to squeeze in for the last tour of the day. Our guide Susan, a local, was a stellar story teller and it was a wonderful experience. You can walk around the castle grounds during the weekend (it’s locked up otherwise) but going into the keep was superb. Susan took us all the way to top where you can look out over the countryside. Although I have never seen Mel Gibson’s movie Braveheart (historically Scottish) it is worth hearing the story about how it came to be filmed here in Trim. I fell in love with the town and instead of two nights we have spent four nights here (at the Trim Castle Hotel) and used it as a base for all our travels in the Boyne valley. So much history at this castle and it is a pleasure to see it
every morning and evening during our stay. The cost of the tour is small (5 euro for adults) and SO worth it.

Trim castle is hard to miss as it stands in the middle of the village. There is a parking lot adjacent to the castle which requires payment for parking.
The castle grounds are free to walk around, but there is a charge to enter the castle building. The tour was well worth the visit as there is scaffolding erected inside allows the visitor to actually climb to the top for views inside and out. Our tour guide was quite informative and an excellent presenter. I highly recommend it.

Thank you, David for a fabulous 60 minute tour of the ancient Norman Tower which is the central part of the Trim Castle complex. Your knowledge and insights were most appreciated as was your willingness to answer all our questions. The castle grounds are free to wander but I highly recommend the very reasonably priced hourly tour of the Castle Tower. A huge thank you also to Rosaleen from the Trim Visitor Centre whose knowledge and assistance was invaluable to our time in Trim.
Tip:Parking available for a small fee in the adjacent car park

Wonderful tour of this fascinating historical site.

The lovely Irish lady who gave our 11:45 tour provided a fascinating, insightful and humorous overview of this strategic site. I was a real pleasure to soak up the story of Trim Castle over the centuries and even covered the role of the Welsh in development of the castle. I'd highly recommend this tour and tour guide.. thank you.

It takes approx. an hour or so overall within the castle and keep, which included the guided tour. One can wander about the outer grounds free of charge. The tour was priced at €5 which is not bad considering all the work it takes to maintain the castle and grounds.
I got more of a workout than I anticipated, in climbing up the spiral narrow stone steps from floor to floor. Though there was a thick rope, as a banister of sorts, threaded through iron loops in the stone wall, it didn't feel safe to maintain balance, however that is my only downside experience in the day. I got as far as the level under the roof and as it was a wet murky day, I didn't go up the next level to the roof. (maybe a future visit on a sunny day would be better).
Overall, though I'm glad I made the effort. It was interesting and informative and Margaret was a very good and knowledgeable guide.

You can find castles in almost every town. They range from “fallen down ruins” to full 19th Century “estates”. I have visited over a dozen and Trim is my favorite. Trim is a well maintained 12th Century castle. The tour of the Keep was excellent. It lasts about an hour, finalizing on the open 5th floor for a view of surrounding areas. The signs around the outside explained other aspects. Well done OPW.

A really interesting castle ruin. The tour guide Susan was extremely competent and friendly, she could respond to all questions and also made the guests who did not want/could not climb the narrow stairs feel good. However, if you don’t go up the spiral staircase at all, you miss most of the tour, which would be a real shame.

We really enjoyed our time at Trim Castle! You have to take the guided tour to go inside and it takes about an hour and is totally worth it! This castle is so well preserved and had 3d models inside the great hall where the tour starts to show the stages of construction! The tour guide was so knowledgeable. The view from the top was amazing and you can see several of other historic structures/ruins from there. Trim was the only castle we toured that still had the curtain wall intact so it gave a better perspective for the scale of what it once was. Fun Fact there were a few movies filmed there including parts of Braveheart! This was the perfect ending to our vacation and I would 100% recommend it!
