Made famous as a rally point for American soldiers during Liberation in 1944, this church raises majestically above the town and is worth taking some photos of. There are placards around it in French and English showing then and now photos of what took place here. As others have said, worth reading ahead before coming here so you have a clearer understanding of what happened here.

A simple but beautiful church in the middle of this lovely French village, with a lot of history. Worth taking your time to read the plaques that give the wartime history before entering the church. A popular tourist spot each June as the liberation of France is commemorated. Don't forget to enjoy the rest of the village.

We loved visiting this town (including the church) as part of our guided D-Day Tour. Walking around the square, reading all the story boards, literally took us back in time. There is also a new Monument for the Resistance (just a stroll from the church) and it talks of the massive French participation on both sides of the Channel before, during and after D-Day. Well worth a look. There are a couple of souvenir shops in town, oh and there's a public toilet here too (just in case).

We enjoyed visiting this town (including the church) and walking around during the D-Day festivities. The Monument of the Resistance (just a couple of blocks from the church) has a field behind it for paratrooping, although that was canceled during the year we visited due to high winds; just a short walk from the main town center.

Not sure what the sign was trying to communicate about the soldiers, the priest etc. but as with the rest of this area, the people here truly remember the sacrifice of the soldiers and their families and never want to forget what could have been had Germany remained in occupation. The fact that this church remembers speaks volumes.

This small village you're about to bypass when driving towards Utah beach. As Utah is the farthest beach we rushed to it primary to see the museum while it's open, so saved our visit to this small village at dusk on our way back.
The Church is very nice, both inside and outside and has an interesting history.
Across it is a cute square with a town hall and small streets around with several plaques explaining interesting facts of WWII.

This little town with a splendid old church is well worth a visit if you are in the area. The church tower was used as a lookout by the Germans. There are info boards around the town center that tell of interesting incidents around June 6, 1944.

Really beautiful church, with an amazing spire, which was rebuilt after the war.
Take time to visit this church and walk around the village. The story of theinvasion, by allied troops, on Utah beach, is told on information boards, all around the church and village. Details which would otherwise have been lost, show the human side of this battle, all shared by the local people. Well worth a visit

Church has a interesting history in WW2.

Felt more could have been made of it, although they did have some photos with a little detail around it.

The main reason to go here is of course if you are a WW2 buff. The church is interesting to see. Go inside it's nice (and free). The town (shops and cafe) around the church square are cute. You can see everything in about 20 minutes but still worth a look and you can buy souvenirs, lunch, ice cream. There is a nice bakery just off the main square which sells good sandwiches and pastries. The other reason to go to Sainte Marie Eglise is the Airbourne Museum which is amazing.
