History |Galleries | Cafes | Boutique shops Central Otago's best kept secret - a free visitor attraction that has something for the whole family. When the Clyde dam was completed in 1990, Cromwell's main street disappeared under Lake Dunstan. Some of the historic buildings dating back to the gold rush of the 1860's were saved or lovingly rebuilt on higher ground, creating the Cromwell Heritage Precinct. Step back in time to the gold rush and explore heritage buildings, many with artisan businesses in them, located on the shore of beautiful Lake Dunstan. Open daily.

It was nice to see a precinct of old and well preserved buildings saved from the flooding of the dam. I would suggest that some of the exhibits need more equipment within them and possibly set up as a working museum. Eg the stables and...More

Historic buildings with old settings and furniture to reinforce the history. Some of the buildings have plaques showing the succession of owners/occupants from way back when until the 1980's.

Lovely little historical town. Worth a wonder! A couple cute little cafes on the waterfront too! Grab coffee & cinnamon scroll from the Italian cafe!

Very interesting to walk through and look at the history of Cromwell. Would be better if they had "tour" guides. Maybe some dressing up and a town crier or something but still a lovely spot

I spent a lot of my childhood in Cromwell so I'm well aware of what the original town looked like. I found the experience rather dull. Lacking in guidance on where buildings existed. Also some of the town buildings go back to the exact originals...More

We were revisiting and amazed at the presentation of this area. The shops, galleries, eating places and displays have made this a destination to visit. The pity is that ii is along way from the township when walking.
