Friendly staff and well set up attraction.
Really enjoyed a couple of hours spent here discovering some of this amazing countries history. Declan our guide was super knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. Some awesome feats of engineering to see and thoroughly enjoyed having a go at gold panning. Amazing views down the river.

Wow, what anamazing kiwi experience. The staff were so helpful, kind and passionate about sharing the history and gold lore for the region. The talk was informative and seeing the 130 year old machinery at work was a blast. Panning for gold was fun too and also very peaceful. I loved seeing the historic buildings. This is an activity great for kids and adults alike. Allow for three hours to get the full experience.

Very interesting place to visit. Could spend hours here. Only did the short loop this time but saw plenty of history along the way. Another stop worth doing.

What an awesome place just a 7 min drive from Cromwell.Allow at least 3 hours unless you get hooked on gold panning and yes those who are lucky can still find gold and keep it.
The staff are wonderful and the guide included in price is awesome and informative. I now know all about sluicing.
Demonstration on water powered machinery used over 130 years is still working.
Put your walking shoes on and trek over the rugged hills where once the miners walked, worked and lived. Along the way check out the reconstructed Chinese village . Walk takes about hour.
This is a great attraction not to be driven past.

Awesome experience. We have driven by Gold Fields every time we have visited Queenstown, but never called in. We are so glad we did as its a hidden gem. Fully interactive tour and such engaging staff telling everyone about the history of the area, and yes, everyone gets a chance to pan for gold.

Highly recommend

We crossed the beautiful blue river, there was a warm greeting from the lady in the office on a quiet day, and we set off for a 45 minute wander/clamber around the Chinese village and surroundings. Back at the office we sat with other visitors and were shown gold nuggets and told stories of settlers, gold miners, success and failure. The stamper was under repair but we had a good idea of how it worked, and then had a go at panning for gold ourselves. No luck there, but we were lucky we found the Goldfields Mining Centre, absolutely recommend it for all ages. Congratulations to the staff and all involved. Back across the river we enjoyed our picnic in the sun perched on rocks, marvelling at the tenacity of the miners all those years ago.

Perfect opportunity to explore and experience finding gold in a mixture of sand and gritty muddy water. Really not easy and the finding is a tiny piece of gold if you are lucky.

We arrived between tours and there were a large group coming after us so they recommend we join the end of the current tour which gave us the gold panning (also they gave us a discount for missing most of the tour). My wife really enjoyed the panning hard to drag her away from it..gold fever?? There was a young boy next to her just as enthralled and his parents spent a lot of time panning with him. Unfortunately we were not that successful. Walked around the place for an hour interesting with a lot of history and great photo opportunities.

I would suspect with the whole tour etc you could spend a couple hours easily

A must do to get a hands-on appreciation for the Gold Rush era which marked Central Otago on the map. Easily accessible, it's at the Cromwell end of the Kawarau Gorge between Queenstown and Cromwell. The guided tour is a must, with knowledgeable guides. There is a real gold nugget you can feel. A working stamping battery and sluicing gun are on display and you can also have a go at gold panning yourself. Don't expect to find a big nugget though - the majority of Central Otago's gold is alluvial gold.

Taking this tour before visiting the Bannockburn Sluicings will enhance the experience of the sluicing site.

Go earlier in the day so you have time to take the self-guided walk around the precinct. Get a feel for how miners used to live in their little huts back in the late 1800s with the below freezing conditions in winter to the stifling heat of the summer.
