There is no better place

What. A. Great. Experience.

We booked knifemaking the day before on a whim while driving down the West Coast. Holy crap, this ended up being one of the highlights of our trip.

We spent the day with Stephen and Robyn, along with 10 other guests, making our own knives. The process is a well oiled machine (not literally), as Robyn and Stephen handled our group with ease. It never felt like you were alone in crafting the knives, they were always watching and helping and guiding us along. Everything was so accessible and unpretentious.

This was a great way to meet other travelers too -- you are with your group for about 8 hours, so it's nice to shoot the breeze with fellow knife makers. There are activities on the property, too, to help pass the time: knife throwing, horseshoes, a giant swing, sassy birds, some ducks, a cute doggo, it's great.

You're able to make the knife your own by customizing the blade, handle length, etc, and Robyn and Stephen help get it there. So you don't have to make a dagger or something really sharp, you do you!

MORE WOMEN SHOULD DO THIS ACTIVITY! We had a very male-heavy group, many of whom said their partners/spouses opted out, but ladies, this was a super fun activity and I left with a knife I feel really good about.

Fantastic day out!
Nov 2019 • Friends
I’d heard many good things about this place so decided to take dad as a birthday gift. They’ve reportedly made 25,000 knives and it’s no surprise with the interesting and entertaining day offered. The day flew by, we had a lot of fun and we walked away with a quality knife that we’d be happy to have held up in court (a running line throughout the day from host Steve!). A really interesting and informative day with plenty of help that anyone would enjoy. Lunch was great too.
Very highly recommended!!

Best day out with sone great people
Oct 2019 • Family
My 17 year old boy had picked this activity out as “his choice” for our trip back to NZ.
What a gem!
Stop thinking about it and just book a day with Robyn and Steve, two of the nicest, down-to-earth people you will find. Making a knife is a real bonus. The day was just fantastic.
Thanks so much for inviting us into your home from Ethan and Nathan (Tasmania)

Great result at the end of a great day!
Oct 2019 • Family
My husband first made a knife with Steve and Robyn 12 years ago and was so pleased with the experience he came back on our second trip to NZ, this time with our 11 year old daughter!
Both of them thoroughly enjoyed the day and our daughter is still talking about her knife and proudly explaining to me all of the processes it took to make it. From this perspective I can say what a great activity this is for parents with older kids ( over 10), it is safe, informative and something a family can do together with a great product they can take home at the end of the day.
Many people worry about taking a knife back through customs but there is no problem so long as you carry the knife in your checked in luggage.
Steve and Robyn ( & their clever dog Puppet) were such friendly hosts ( they even remembered my hubby from last time) and do everything in their power to make sure you have a wonderful day. As to be expected, they both know their stuff about knife making and will help you every step of the way should you need it.
Barrytown is a very picturesque town and it is easy to find accommodation near to Robyn and Steve’s place. Cargill cottage, which we organized through Robyn and Steve was warm, cosy & close by.
We so enjoyed our day we will definitely make a third visit here for our next stay!

Aug 2019
My wife and I along with another couple had one of the best days ever. Robyn and Steven are salt of the earth people, just lovely and so welcoming. The making of the knives was a bonus! We got so energised in the knife making and seeing our beautiful knives take shape.
Highly recommend this great day out, you will have an amazing knife and meet some amazing people. 10 out of 10!!

BRILLIANT day out!
Jul 2019 • Family
My husband booked myself and our 2 boys (10 and 12) in for knife making and I have to say that I wasn’t that keen to go but what a FANTASTIC day! Steve and Robyn are great hosts and such a hoot, it was worth going along just to spend the day with them. We were all super proud of our knives at the end of the day and the boys did brilliantly, patiently assisted by Steve and Robyn. This is a MUST if your visiting the coast, you won’t be disappointed... and great dog tricks from Poppet the dog too)

Once in a lifetime experience

I highly recommend this day out. I would imagine there's not many places in the world where you can spend a day in a beautiful spot, learning the craft of knife-making and have a good laugh to boot! We had such an enjoyable day grinding, banging, throwing axes, swinging high on a swing and then rounding it off with a nice bubbly. We all love our new knives and look at them with fond memories. We also thoroughly enjoyed our Knifemaking accommodation which we stayed in for 3 days.

Oustanding experience and a great new boning knife!
Jan 2019 • Family
Took son (15) & both thoroughly enjoyed the full-on day of forging, hammering, axe-throwing, wild-swing swinging, shaping and polishing with a group of c. 10 others. A sizzling hot day with no rain (!) but plenty of fun, laughs and craic with the group. Steve's blunt banter lead the way - if you don't have a sense of humour you need to borrow one for the day and sharpen it :-). Never a dull moment & 2 new knives ready for hunting/boning!

How nice to be invited into a home where this craft is just an accepted way. No indemnities and fancy things, just plain down to earth normal craftsmanship, which makes you feel like you can actually be creative and make something you can keep. Thanks Steven and Robyn, you guys are amazing
