This is my 2nd time to visit the Santuario Padre Pio and I still find it amazing, seeing how they preserved it, specifically his fingers which I did not notice the 1st time I was there.

This was my second visit to the San Giovanni Rotondo sanctuary of Padre Pio. Some years back, while the new church had been constructed it was still being fine-tuned (the bells were not hooked up yet) and Padre Pio's remains were to be found in the old and smaller church.
this summer I returned to the sanctuary accompanied by a frequent visitor that knew the itinerary well. We started by visiting the old church where Padre Pio lived, and said mass. heard confessions and answered the countless letters written to him over time.
The new church, designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, is modern and massive. Its basement is ornate and luxurious (the crypt is decorated with gold foil made from the donations of pilgrims) and holds the remains of Padre Pio moved here from the old church. The line-ups are long to access the basement and then to queue to view his remains (no photos are allowed and silence is required but it is well worth the wait.

San Giovanni Rotondo is a small town in the central part of the Gargano peninsula, the part raising up to about 700 m above the nearby sea. The sanctuary itself stands at the top of the hill and can be accessed by car, on foot or (in case of groups) by small buses driven by the locals.
The old church has two entrances, one to the original church which became much too small when Father Pio became famous, and one to the sizeable church built later on and financed by contributions of his followers. There is also a monastery right beside it.
About 200 m away stands the new sanctuary, a magnificent building with huge proportions, with a semi-circular roof and powerful marble arches. The interior is a bit unusual, not very richly decorated, as opposed to the crypt, adorned with rich mosaics, surrounding the tomb of Padre Pio.
A place a bit out of the way, but certainly worth visiting.

Beautiful and sacred place. A great experience to visit!

If you are coming here via public transpo, here are a few tips.

1. From Foggia train station, take the Sita bus to San Giovanni Rotondo. You can buy the ticket at the ATAF office near the train station. Going out of Foggia station, go to your right and you will find another building with a ticket counter and waiting area.

2. Wait for the Sita bus (not orange buses!!) at the stop that is parallel from the ATAF building. There will be a sign in front of the bus that will indicate if it will go to the Sanctuary.

3. The bus stop near Padre Pio's Sanctuary is the last stop.

4. Going back to Foggia, go to the same bus stop. Tickets can be bought to the corner store near the bus stop. There is a sign on top that says Bigletto.

5. If you are going to Foggia, check for the bus with the sign Foggia on it.

Excellent!!! The architecture of the building is amazing. It blends in with the natural surroundings. Then when inside there is an explosion of mosaic art from the Philippines depicting the life of St. Padre Pio. The viewing of St. Padre Pio was very respectful and spiritual. The whole experience was awesome and well worth the trip.

We drove from Sorrento to visit the wholly shrine of Padre Pio. Santa Maria Delle Grazie Church is a beautiful church and behind it they built the new church to accommodate the large number of pilgrims. The Saint's body can be viewed in the crypt of the Santa Maria delle Grazie Church. Not far from the Shrine is the center of San Giovanni Rotondo. A lovely city to see. We stayed in a nice hotel near the shrine (Ariae Hotel) (~ half a mile walk but uphill-not a bad walk at all). the hotel was very nice modern clean comfy and offered us a good breakfast. (the one thing that we did not care for too much was its tiny tiny shower-we managed). A wonderful trip.

After a visit to the beautiful and tranquil beaches of Manfredonia (you will only find Italians) and its imposing castle, cheer for an incredible four or five hours religious tour. Eighteen kilometers from there, following a winding mountain range with beautiful sea views, you will arrive at Monte Sant`Angelo, home to one of 7 sanctuaries in honor of Saint Michel in Europe (see the history of their "alignment" on the internet). This one is underground (under the church), wedged in a cave. Twenty five further on you will find the no less famous and beautiful Sanctuary of Padre Pio (the miraculous saint of Pietrelcina - look for videos about this wonderful saint). There are three churches in this sanctuary. Padre Pio is in the most modern church, the lower one. Easy parking at both locations (crowded on Sundays). Visitations are free at both sanctuaries. From there, drive another 50 km to the fantastic town of Foggia, the barn of Italy. Watch the huge wheat fields (and the huge farms silos) that surround the city for huge expanses.

This city within a city is an apt memorial to Padre Pio. The enormous modern church is beautiful and somehow futuristic. Quite an architectural feat.

We went there to honor Saint Padre Pio. It was incredible. Highly recommend. We went there especially because my wife saw him give a mass in Italy when she was a little girl. She and her family pray to him constantly. He is their patron saint.

Highly recommend! So beautiful! This is the newest church in honor of Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, a very beloved Catholic priest and Saint. His tomb is located in the lower level floor of the church. His body is partially incorrupt.

So much to see, reflect, and pray about...There are several other buildings that are within walking distance (very close) to this church:

1) Friary where Saint Padre Pio lived;
2) Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace (older church where he celebrated Mass; attached to friary);
3) Basilica of Our Lady of Grace (newer church; attached to older church building)

I highly encourage everyone to visit the Pilgrim Office to request a guided tour of all the grounds. We traveled there from Rome by train and were on the church grounds for about 5 hours...wish we would've stayed longer!

For those of you who don't know who Padre Pio is, he was a friar, priest, mystic, and stigmatist who received the 5 wounds of Jesus Christ on his body for the last 50 years of his life, and was canonized as a Catholic Saint by Pope John Paul II in 2002.

Many people went to visit him for Confession, because he had the gift of reading souls (he could see a person's sins). He also had the ability to bilocate, to communicate with angels and had all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. From his 50 years of suffering with the 5 wounds of Christ (stigmata) and many physical assaults from the devil, he was able to share in Jesus' Christ's redemptive sufferings which helped save countless souls from damnation (based on what is written in Colossians 1:24 "Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church").

Both his room (also known as his cell) in the friary and his confessional are preserved for public viewing. And his partially incorrupt body is in the Santuario Padre Pio (aka Chiesa di San Pio; Church of St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina) inside a clear casket in the lower church.
